Found another thing to like about Porsches
No nasty antennas with nasty holes in the fenders or holes in the roof. Crooked piece of junk sticking out from front or back fender. Good going Porsche!
Yet...I remember in the 50's wanting so bad for my dad to get a 8 ft "Whip antenna" bolted to the back bumper of his car a ('53 Meteor 4 door). We coulda been SO cool. My dad not buying it. Front curb feelers was as far as he was going. He knew! Oh, and BTW I don't think we had a radio, AM/FM or CB. He knew. He's been gone for so long, he was a kind gentle man. Still miss him sometimes. |

I worked for a Fiat dealer for a VERY short time in about 1973. None of the new cars arrived with radios, so we installed radios and antennae. To install the antenna in the front fender we drilled a 1/4 hole and took a punch and pounded it in until the hole was big enough to receive the antenna. Our cheap ass boss bought the Fiat approved radios, but got cheap antennae from the local sleaze bag who sold vinyl roof coverings. Remember those?

All Porsches came w antennas in the fenders until the windshield antennas came along sometime in the late ‘80s(?)
At least they were quality German Hirschmanns. New Porsches came w a tiny key to pull mast up when it was fully retracted. Some of the cars had power antennas but not my ‘82 SC, it was manual. ![]()

I had an early 80’s SC. There was no place for the antenna, so I extended it horizontally underneath the dashboard.
Worked great. |

The older 911s had the antenna on the left side if it was manual. So a guy could reach it from drivers seat. Electric antenna was placed on the right....

Mine is on the left fender, goes up right when the key (or anything) is inserted into the ignition if the radio had not been turned off.

I also like the no antenna look. I'd be ok if my Cayman had no radio. I know, crazyness.

Porsche's original power antenna (Hirshmann, I think) was one of the least dependable parts on the car back in the day. Some times you could repair them but most often that was temporary. Factory replacement cost an arm and a leg. Probably one reason they went to the windshield mount.

I had our 84' Carrera rigged up with a tiny on-off switch to keep the antenna down after I added a Blaupunkt cd changer up front. I had to replace the antenna early on when it seized up, and it was expensive. CD's? Huh, what are those things anyway?

We had been to Canadian Tire where we saw these pieces of pure pre teen joy, that any car guy would die for. My dad, always patient, asked how much? Just $7.95 we said. Well I only make $35.00 per week, so you guys will have to save up if you REALLY want it. We stayed in town for the day at a park where my dad picked us up at supper time and nothing more was said about the antenna. Too cool for us I guess. Never saved up to get one, but I always knew my dad was where we got the "car guy thing" to this day. He was a Ford man to the end. I'm going to look at pictures of my '73T was sure it had no antenna, I'll check it out. Last edited by yellowperil; 06-16-2020 at 05:08 AM.. |
