Anyone with a TWIC in long beach? I need an escort
Not that kind of escort, but a twic escort. Have 15 days to pick up at the port. I would rather throw some cash to someone on pelican.

I had one but I let it expire.
Not worth the $$$ to renew. |

That's what I figured. 125$ and the escorts are going for 80-100$.
I'm only gonna import 1 POV, so I don't see it worth the money to obtain one.

You might fly under the radar if you are active duty (with a current/chipped ID). Not sure, but there may be a bit of "discretionary" reciprocity since TWIC cards can get you on base. If you happen to have an S+ security clearance, you should be exempt as well. Or maybe Global Entry might suffice? If you haven't called the port in question, you might do so and see what your options are (or take your chances with the gate guard).

I called the customs and they were very nice. told me to label the truck as a passenger truck to avoid paying that 25% tax. I think I'm feeling lucky! If I need an impromptu escort. Not the end of the world.

I to had a TWIC and it's not that simple. Just anyone with the credential cannot simply 'escort' you. The standard procedure where my wife worked at Pier F was that a person with the stevedore company operating at that pier would come out and get you. They have since eliminated escorts and you have to be accompanied by a Longshore guard. You pay for his/her time.
No, the way to do this is first talk to the shipper. They should have arranged everything ahead of time. Once your Customs papers are in order, the easiest way to do this is by phone and fax. You need to get all that done the day before. On the day you take delivery, the easy way (might be the only way) is that a tow truck company working that dock will get the vehicle and drive it through the gate to the street where you take over. They were charging as little as $50 to do this. Once again, you're gonna tear your hair out unless you understand the procedure and follow the protocol. And once again, why didn't the freight forwarder have the arrangements made in advance? |

I'll call them tomorrow. I'm completing the informal import myself, so I've completed all the customs, EPA, DOT paperwork. -Would I have to give 24 notice to pick up after, or before clearing customs? -Would I be able to load the vehicle on my trailer in the yard, or would I have to hire out a tow truck?

Received. I spoke to one of those ladies this morning and recieved more clarification of the process.
The escort drives the vehicle out of the yard for me so I can load it onto my trailer, and it's possible to get the POV same day if I clear customs early in the AM. Only thing left is to double check my paperwork, and drive my butt to California.

How to import a kei truck? Throw all logic to the wind and just wing it!
I thought I was prepared to clear customs. Nope, they wanted pictures of the dash, speedo, vin, seats. The first lady at the cbp failed to mention this when I called ahead. You'll need a passport. CBP form 7501 is doa, and you need a different form if you're importing it for yourself. However, being polite and wearing a balaclava I was able to get the truck released and told to do the import when I get to AZ. Paid no duties on the truck. -escort was essentially a bribe where the gentlemen I hired said it was an "amazing racket "... As for the truck itself. 27k km, minor surface rust in a couple places. But the listing was very accurate and I only paid 1700 for the truck. I'll order another one with a dump bed and keep it for the property. As for my atv trailer. I get 19 mpg in the cummins towing it, drops to about 14 mpg with my deck over gooseneck. ![]()

Yes sir. RHD.
I took it for a test drive and it's quite the little car. I'm not sure why I haven't discovered these sooner.

Haha!
It fits two comfortable, but I'll use it to get to town. Mod list is low. Window tint, front axle jamar, 13" Geo wheels, FM Bluetooth radio/cb and put in door speakers.

So my local CBP office says that the import is not correct. By not paying duty upon import, or turning in my CBP form 7501. It should have never been released. The AZ non border offices aren't able to complete imports. Was told that since it was a low amount vehicle that the CBP officer could've waved the duty.
![]() I asked if there's a place I can send my 7501 and a check, but he said no. Let's see what the DMV says when I make an appointment

Hope you can prove you bought it private party! If not DMV will be happy to collect sales tax for you.
I’m curious to see how they title it. I’ve seen the AZ dmv be super lax and just hand out titles, and I’ve been made to jump through hoops for bonded titles because they don’t know how to look at the vin on an old car. |
