Donald Fagen and" Yacht Rock, the documentary."

Donald Fagen tells the director/producer of the film to "go eff yourself" when asked to participate in the doc - but allows a number of Steely Dan songs to be used in the doc.

Discuss.

I would never classify Steely Dan as yacht rock

Certain songs would qualify, and I'm a big fan. I don't think it's a dig at all.

I can't tell you how many bands we trashed back in HS in the '70s for being, "too soft," or not real rock music are among my favorites now. I listen to the Beegees, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Bread...you name it. Actually, I bought and listened to SD back then as well.

I realize now how insecure all of us "tough guys" were with caring about what others thought of our music selection...it used to be a really common thing. No idea if it's the same for youngsters now.

I apologize for taking this off on a tangent but it's something that's always bothered me. And don't get me wrong, I still love The Rolling Stones, J. Geils, Sabbath and almost all of the "acceptable" music we played on turntables back then but I absolutely love getting lost in Yacht Rock these days. A lot of it is just beautiful, masterfully written music. I wish that I could go back to being young with my current brain....caring what anyone thinks of you based on image is just 100% lame. IMO, of course.

Carry on.

Maybe he does not like being grouped with other yacht rockers as that dilutes their uniqueness?

The Quervo Gold, the fine Colombian make tonight a wonderful thing. I don't even want to say how many years it took me to land those lyrics in my head.

I never heard that expression before.

All I know is that bands like the Dan and the Doobies were/are VERY good instrumentally.

I hadn't either until I saw that show.
Evidently it's something a you-tuber invented.
I really like the music that was included in that show
but I do not agree with the genre classification
or the premise.

It's definitely a phrase invented by the younger generation that wasn't around when the music was current, I first heard it used at least 10 years ago, (maybe 15?), on a flyer that a DJ made for a playlist for a party. It's not a recent thing, this forum is just really old.

The term yacht rock was coined in 2005 by the makers of the online comedy video series Yacht Rock, who connected the music with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of boating. It was considered a pejorative term by some music critics.

We're going to see a Steely Dan tribute group named the Fine Columbians in January appearing locally. I saw them by myself earlier this year when my wife was out of town. They were fantastic!

Couple band doing nationwide tours with names like "Yacht Rock Review", etc. for years now. Also there is an old multi-part "mockumentery" of shorts on YT based on the term.

Found it.

It's funny. I remember listening to Aja on my home stereo as a teenager. I got Aja because it was part of the Columbia House "13 albums for 1 cent" promotion. Oddly, I always liked SD but also liked Def Leppard, ACDC, etc. too. If you're looking for underappreciated artist from a slightly later era, go listen to some of Sade's early albums. Amazing vocals that still stand up today.

The breath and scope of musical genres in the 60's, 70's and 80's is unimaginable today: Rock, Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Motown, Rap, Country, Heavy Metal, Soft Rock, ballads, even Captain and Tennille FTLOG.

Here is the same artist who did "Loan Me a Dime" with Greg Allman then this in the 70's (start at 2:35):

BTW, this was on Cali AM/FM when I was a kid:

Imagine. The sheer amount of talent, from all points on the compass, was thrilling. I am glad I was there.

Oh, and Sade. Yes, please.
