after market starter

Anyone know of a decent after market starter for my wife's Sienna. It has 160,xxx miles but we are planning to get 250 out of it. Other then that, its in great shape, doesn't burn a drop of oil.

I see them on for 90 bucks to 250 for a factory unit. Remfg is OK.

I usually buy reman based on who rebuilt it.
What are your brand options?

I stay away from AutoZone even with their lifetime warranty. You'll be spending a lifetime R&R the starter.

No, no autozone crap. I think Denso is oem supplier?

I put a new one from Napa in my ‘92 V8 Mustang, not remanufactured and it’s been good for 6 months. So not that long...

Try rock auto

I got a Hitachi MAF for my GMC, and a Mitsubishi alternator for my WRX, both online for 1/3 of the dealer cost. Quality isn't always price dependent, unless you are in a hurry.

Good luck with the search.

This.

If you can afford the lay up the car for a couple of days, having it rebuilt locally is an economical and great option.

Look on Rok.....Ato frequently can find OE, OEM parts at a fair price. Personally I would not buy anything other than original equipment because like a few of key parts - if they don't work - you ain't going nowhere

I have been pleased with all the TYC starters I have installed on our Toyotas and Hondas. In fact, if I didn't buy OEM, they would be the only one I would put on my car. TYC, Genera Corp. 1800 Radiator has them in stock.

If it is a Denso, you can fix it with new ring contacts and cleaning of the plunger. Dealer has them, $8-9. Easy stuff.

I've had (generally) good luck going this route.

If you can get it rebuit a place you can trust that sounds ideal.

However if it comes to needing to order one I say bite the bullet and get the OEM part. More than 2x as much seems hard to swallow, but just not worth the aggravation for aftermarket risk here. The first one lasted 160k miles seems its earned its 250$ asking price.

This. Have your old starter rebuilt by a local craftsman. He will take pride in his work, and you keep your dollars local, and most likely get a better starter as a bonus.

This. I was building a HO small block Mopar and took the old starter in and got a high torque rebuild for $25. This was in 1995. Still cranks great to this day though.

flipper35 06-22-2020 11:51 AM

I had the same shop do the alternator as well.

Got it. We have other cars she can drive. I know exactly where those guys are. They rebuild a couple higher output alternators for my trucks before. Thanks
