i thought i was smarter than a fifth grader. sold the crappy 240Z that i rebuilt, rewelded, rebondo'd, rinse repeat with fiberglass fenders, you get the drift. Bought it $1300 while in college, sold it for $1800 after all that luvin to a guy down the street when I have my first kid, went to CA and bought the 911.... i'm gonna say the 911 sitting in the garage isn't gonna get me $100K (yet?)....sigh... but the fun factor isn't comparable. It's funny that the old cars i used to have like the camaro's, road runners ,chevelle, etc that are commanding big dough, I just don't have any urge to own or drive them again? Why is that? Reminds me of the nerdie boz getting the girl. LOL, may our 911 prevail at the end of the day.

I don't know why the pic won't show up, but it is a pic of a orange 240Z that sold for $105K on BAT!

That orange 240 must been something very, very special to draw money like that. Like perfect condition with 12 miles on the odometer special.
Regular ole classic cars do not bring the huuuge $$$ we see on barrett jackson or others, they are the best of the best of the best.

Another way to look at it that might make you feel better:

if you took all the money you spent on that car in college, plus all the money it would take to store and maintain the car over all those years, and invested it in Apple stock instead. How much would that be worth adjusted for inflation?
It's very rare to make money investing in rolling stock when everything is factored in.

A Vintage Z decal is retained on the right quarter window. Replacement 16″ Panasport wheels are mounted with Yokohama A520 tires. Nissan’s reconditioning program included refreshment of the suspension as well as updating the brakes with non-asbestos pads and linings. A walk-around video has been provided by the seller.

Interiors were also refurbished on Nissan Vintage Restoration Program cars using new or old-stock factory components where needed. This example is trimmed in black vinyl with vented seat inserts and diamond-quilted side panel covers. A storage cubby resides in place of a radio.

The simulated woodgrain steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline, while supplementary gauges are located over the center stack. Just under 70k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, 200 of which were added by the seller in 13 years. An air conditioning knob is affixed to the underside of the dash, and a Nissan commemorative plaque is mounted on the center console.

The 2.4-liter L24 inline-six was rated at 150 horsepower when new. Vintage Z powertrains were rebuilt to period specifications, and each was sold with a one-year, 12k-mile warranty. An upgraded radiator was also installed as part of the work. Annual oil changes were performed under the seller’s ownership, with the most recent completed in October 2019. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. A clutch with a non-asbestos lining was fitted as part of the restoration program. Additional underside photos are viewable in the gallery, and driving videos can be seen below.

I bought my 240z in Freshmen year of college from Hickman Datsun in metro ATL. I paid right at $4k for it in 1980. Owned it for about 8 years or so - drove it across country (ATL to PHX) to my first engineering job with Motorola after graduating GaTech with my EE. We moved to Dallas TX about 2 years later after I took a different job at Texas Instruments. About 6 years or so later, after the 240z had been a third vehicle and relegated to the driveway and not garaged, the paint was suffering. I sold it for $1600 to reimburse myself for the purchase of an 8Mhz IBM PC Clone - with all of 512k ram and dual floppy with an amber monochrome monitor.

thanks Mas... mine was originally orange but i painted it a maroon, put on 4 spoke Libra rims (NLA) and put a 5 speed (somebody told me the brain from the 280Z was NLA and would be worth some dough.... I still have it in my garage, maybe I should BAT it?) in from a 280Z and my sister in law sewed me up some custom seat covers. I had fun with it driving it to myrtle beach, CA to way up in the great white north. Problem with it was that at about 70 mph the front end floated like you were plowing thru a turn and that was on a straight away... and oh yea the shake rattle and roll, you could make a milk shake. Still for $100K I'm gonna guess that the frame rail will still rust out just sitting in the garage... just like mine did and I didn't even drive it in the winters! Amazing, $100K!

Well, the BAT $100k is one of several that Nissan did a factory restoration - so I imagine the restoration quality was very high. Hopefully it's been well taken care of (looks it) so the likehood of rust is minimal.

To those not familiar with the Z's, it's got a smuggler's hold behind the passenger seat - that is similar to the one in our 911's frunk. It's a good place to stash "stuff" from the authorities if you need. Maybe Datsun got the idea of the hold from Porsche?

Behind driver's seat too...'71 onward, not found on the early Zs

$105k for the factory authorized resto is nothing...how about $310k plus fees for this original series one? :eek:

With both of these taken into account, your former bondo and rust bucket is still worth about $5-6k today, so I would not feel too bad. :)

still wouldn't turn back the clock. nvr look in the mirror. a friend bought a austin for $30k.. a piece of junk at that time... last count he "invested" $800k..... it's "worth" quite a bit now, so what do I know? LOL

This. People see a low mileage survivor sell at an elite auction and think their clapped out teenage Bondo bucket would fetch the same price. Not.
