Make Bruins Great Again

The EV free lunch is going to be ending soon.
California is now piling on higher fees to register an EV. They have to get the tax money you aren't spending at the gas pumps some how.
https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/california-adds-electric-vehicle-fees-up-to-175 I predict others will follow and then the fees will start going up each year.

I drive an EV and have been expecting this since before I decided to buy one. Anyone who didn't know this was coming had their head in the sand.
No different than a city trying to entice a business to come to town by cutting taxes for a period of time... California wanted more EV's and gave incentives to have them. I use the roads, I don't mind paying my fair share, especially considering how much I save not commuting with gas anymore. |

Ohio hit us with it this year. $200 for a pure EV. They included Volts as "pure" EVs for now, but we're putting pressure on the Ohio house to reclassify them with the Prius and other hybrids.

speaking of "fair share" - large trucks should pay a lot more than they do
It's obvious that EVs should pay something, and all vehicles should pay a wt./mile tax if the mileage can be easily determined |

The biggest perk here was free parking at state and city parking lots. That includes the airport lots. Many airport workers, pilots and flight staff had EVs for that perk and never had to pay for parking, until this week.

WA (State of Washington /upper left coast) has been charging quite a premium on EV's
Then again many got a ~10k sales tax waived

People that traveled a lot also made use of the EV perks. Sometimes EVs would be parked at the airport for weeks. When they leave, FREE parking. Daily parking is $15. Park 20 days for a fee of $300, but you get out free.

sorry you're a trucker and am having problems but you need to face facts they pay only about 80% of what they should pay - Federal Highway Administration, Addendum to the 1997 Federal Highway Cost Allocation Study: Final Report, May 2000. Last edited by RWebb; 07-11-2020 at 01:31 PM.. |

Hawaii is considering a road tax based on miles driven instead of a gas tax.

They go by the previous year's safety inspection mileage.

Had a friend who moved houses. The dealerships had the indys lined up dancing and bidding against each other for the lowest move quote. Many were net losses. The dealerships would pay by how the crow flies, not the only viable route. There was some complex kickback scheme which he didn't buy into. He was a straight shooter yes/no git 'er done man. I'd have to jog to keep up with his walk. Job opportunities were seasonal surges. He had to fudge hours and stay on the road to make a profit for the year. He didn't take breaks on the job. Drove through 24 hours sometimes. Spent most of his time dealing with all sorts of various state permits restrictions and such. One good breakdown would wipe out his profit for the entire year. It was a precarious hard business.

Very true. In az the 3/4 ton trucks register just like cars (8,000 pounds of very big car). The 1 ton+ get hit with commercial registration, weight fees, ect. I register everything I have under commercial just to pay my fair share/fix the roads.

There's nothing of consequence here. EVs still get up to $7,500 from the Federal Gov't in subsidies, CA can rebate quite a lot as well, depending on income and if you take the HOV stickers. PG&E will rebate you $800 for as many EVs and plug-in hybrids as you can buy or lease. EVs are still heavily subsidized, although Tesla has been losing the Federal tax credits due to hitting volume limits. The "free lunch ending soon" is far from reality. The subsidies have done what they were intended to do- stimulate EVs and plug-ins. EVs can be pretty nice cars to drive, as well as surprisingly fast. The silent torque is pretty intoxicating, just as a good exhaust note is. They're not as engaging, but there's some much room to grow.

the UN issued a report, to warn for the problems with EV, eg that resources are mostly mined by child labor in Katanga and some other problems.

When I lived in Oregon (that was in pre-EV days) that topic came about as well. The problem IMO was that I could find no mention of replacing one tax with the other. The state seemed to want it both ways--tax you at the pump, and tax you by mileage. I never read an article that suggested the mileage tax would replace the gas tax.
