Air Cooled Four - Gaskets or Sealants?
I am rebuilding a four cylinder Wisconsin air cooled engine for my Bobcat. These engines are pretty old now, a lot of parts are NLA, I could probably find gaskets but they are rare now.
What do you guys think about using sealants in place of most paper gaskets? Obviously not for head gaskets, but for the numerous oil cover plates I'm thinking of gooping and assembling. The only down side I see is disassembly can be a b11tch. Should I buy paper gasket material for the oil pan, case cover, etc and cut my own gaskets? Or just seal it up with an instant gasket maker? I have had very good success on some one off repairs using Permatex sealants (usually The Right Stuff), but there's also Yamabond (although it's hard to find), and there's Hylomar. I need a reliable leak-proof engine, not a showpiece. It's not an issue of effort. If paper gaskets are superior I will make/buy them.

If it were me, I'd make gaskets and use a sealer that wouldn't harden up/become permanent on the home made gaskets.

Oddly enough, I went through this with a single-cylinder Wisconsin (circa ~1950) earlier this spring. I made paper gaskets and used Curil-T on both sides. Sealed right up without issue. I don't think these older motors were really intended to be assembled without gaskets.

Rebuilt my Kohler CV14 this spring. Used the recommended Loctite SI 5900 for the case. No leaks so far.

That looks a lot like 'The Right Stuff', same package sizes, same dispensing options...
