problem accessing Pelican forums

For the last four days, I have been unable to access the Pelican forums with any browser. The main parts site works perfectly, however. I assumed the forum web servers were down (the message I get with Firefox is "unable to connect", Chrome has a similar message).

On a whim, I tried using my work laptop. When connected to my work VPN, I can access the site!. If I terminate the VPN connection, I get the "unable to connect" error.

Has anyone else experienced access problems of this nature?

That's weird. I'm on the other side of the planet and I rarely have issues.

If the site goes down then yes but otherwise it's always here.

I use Chrome...haven't had any problem.
You've tried clearing browsing data?

No, I doubt that's the issue. The reason I say that - I also have a Mac. Using Safari, it also displays the error. I never use Safari and this was the first time trying to visit forums.pelicanparts.com with that browser.

This is very strange. It's the only site I visit that is having this problem.

I figured it out.

The problem was DNS related. I was using Cloudflare DNS 1.1.1.2 and 1.0.0.2. Neither was resolving forums.pelicanparts.com. I switched to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and now I can access the forums as usual.

I'm guessing Cloudflare flagged the Pelican forums for some reason.

I was going to post that it was probably DNS related. Glad you got it sorted.

FYI, I think it's good to not keep all of your DNS eggs in one basket (cloudflare).

There's nothing wrong with cloud flare, I used them, but in addition, you may want to include a couple of other vendors at the bottom of the list to ensure that you are always likely to get something back.

Lots of good info on good options here.
https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/upstream-dns-providers/

I think I've got about 5-8 DNS servers in my list (Windows and Mac) google, cloudflare, pi-hole, OpenDNS and local ISP.

Default upstream DNS provider on the Pi-hole.

8.8.8.8

OpenDNS Home (owned by Cisco)

Built-in features include a phishing filter, this is the OpenDNS version the Pi-hole would use if you select it during setup.

OpenDNS also provides the OpenDNS FamilyShield (free)- option. The service blocks pornographic content, including our “Pornography,” “Tasteless,” and “Sexuality” categories, in addition to proxies and anonymizers (which can render filtering useless). It also blocks phishing and some malware.

SecureDNS references a real-time block list (RBL) of harmful websites (i.e. phishing sites, malware sites, spyware sites, and parked domains that may contain excessive advertising including pop-up and/or pop-under advertisements, etc.) and will warn you whenever you attempt to access a site containing potentially threatening content.

I've been getting a site not available message for the last three days or so. Sometimes it goes to the site, others I get the message.

Rick Lee 07-16-2020 07:56 AM

I still have to log in every time I come here. eBay has been making me do it too, but no other sites.

stevej37 07-16-2020 11:38 AM

I sometimes can't view the newest pages of a thread. If I delete browsing history..it is ok then.
Never have that happen on other forums.
I figure it's the fault of my 10 year old laptop.
