Weird responses to your 911

Today...I was walking towards my 78 SC in a parking lot when I noticed a man..similar age...eyeing my car as he exited his older F-150.
I said something about how nice of a day it was to drive an open-top (targa) 42 year old car.
He answered with.."My Ford is almost 20 years old...You can't haul much with that thing can you?"

I just didn't know what to answer him with that. I just smiled and walked to my car.

When I was dating I spent some time with a cowgirl who drove a 1 ton Ford diesel pickup. At some point she was over at my place and I was going to take her for a ride in my Speedster. Her reaction on first seeing it was, "Kinda little, ain't it?" That put a punctuation mark on our relationship.

you should have said "I can fit an entire cord of wood in that front trunk there" and walked off before he can ask you to open it

It's almost as though some people have to find some drawback of owning one.
I should have answered.."I don't have much junk to haul"
Prob wouldn't have been good.

Sebscst 07-21-2020 02:57 PM

You should have told him it can “haul ass” figurative and literally.:D

"Naw, I use my deuce and a half to tow around yo' momma."

"I saves money driving a pcar to Costco"

I should have set my small bag of groceries on the whale-tail..secured with a bungee cord, and driven off laughing.

I don't know, seems like a reasonable response to me. You spoke up about your car, its age, and a characteristic his vehicle couldn't duplicate.

He responded with his truck, its age, and a characteristic your vehicle couldn't duplicate.

If you had started off talking about his vehicle first instead of yours it might have gone differently.

I grew up driving pick-ups for 8-10 hours a day starting at 15. Sort of a revelation to drive my first sporting type car, an 82 Supra. I realized at once and have said ever since that: trucks are for working, cars are for driving.

Tidybuoy 07-21-2020 04:12 PM

Actually, I probably would have mentioned the things I have hauled in my sports cars over the years. But, I'm now happy to have both a fun car and a truck.

Thing is the old 911 and 356 are extremely small. Tiny. He was correct, just not worldly enough to trigger a potentially rich conversation.

I bet the dude never sat down with a R&T or Car and Driver in the early 70's poring over the pages with a beer like I know you did. Wondering, should I order some of that Armor All? LOL :)

It's a path we have chosen.

stevej37 07-21-2020 04:23 PM

The whole thing lasted about 10 seconds. I didn't disagree with him...I was just surprised at his remark...and couldn't come up with an answer.
He was showing interest...but maybe he had nothing else also.

Tobra 07-21-2020 04:34 PM

Jealousy

"If I need to haul anything, I take the truck."

Jeff Higgins 07-21-2020 04:42 PM

I always love it when they ask what it will "do the quarter in"...

cabmandone 07-21-2020 04:52 PM

I would have replied "I have a real truck when I need to haul things, not a F150" :D

Eric Hahl 07-21-2020 05:11 PM

And maybe he thought you were fishing for a compliment.
