well, my planned campsite never reopned. boo!
 

there is a great campsite that butts right up to the pacific ocean. you sleep in the woods, but you can hear the ocean. it is really awesome. the surf perch fishing is a solo affair. imagine a beach to yourself on weekdays.

you have to go up a 4x4 trail to access the hidden beach. it is part of California's LOST Coast. 8 miles of rutted, steep off road trail. during the best of weather, some honda minivan will brave it and usually make it, but they drag the hard bits underneath.

last time we were there, there was only five other camp groups. you could use the outhouse doors wide open (for ventilation). super funny. tranquil listening to the waves. we had a wide area all to ourselves.

just checked. it never reopned. oh well. Stay-Cation time. i will dust off my backyard firepit for backyards quiet sits with the wife "talking about our feelings". haha. there is no more simple joy for me than sitting around a fire poking at it with a stick. :) i talked a buddy in going out with his bass boat. he has a 20 footer, so we can stay apart. :)

That campsite sounds like heaven.

I'm too old and fragile (and cranky) to go camping any more.

But there is a hotel in Cayucos (SP?) that butts right up to the beach. There was a storm when I stayed there and at high tide the wave taped the cinder block wall between the hotel and the beach :eek: I was actually a little concerned.

Anywho, pretty much slept with the sliding glass door open the whole time so I could hear and smell the ocean the whole time I was there.

There is an app for that 'nature sounds' :cool:

Sorry about your favorite camp site not opening.

My favorite camp site is my inside my house. Really roughing it is a motel with slow wi-fi for me. My parents never took me camping, because they loved me. I never understood pretending to be homeless for a weekend, but that is just me.

My brother loves to camp, and I guess he got all the camping genes in the family. His favorite site for years was in the middle of nowhere Alabama and he had to use snow chains to get through the mud in his old VW Westifallia camper van. A few years ago the road was blocked with a bulldozer. Now the area is a housing development. He got to camp there for 40 years, but no longer.

Sorry to hear Vash. I hope that you find an alternative other than your back yard. This is my favorite camping spot. Waimanalo beach, Oahu, HI.

Ugh, that's HORRIBLE! I don't know how you can stand having to put up with a situation like that.

Masraum, ha! Thanks. I get to that spot 2-4x per month. It is my centering place. We all need one. Hope that you have your version.

Yeah, that must be a PIA having to put up an EasyUp when your tent already has a rain fly on it.

EZ up is for the sun. It stands in front of tent during the day. Nicer than sticking an umbrella in the sand-bigger footprint.

Sounds as if there is no downside if you randomly stumble onto this place and hang out there a bit?

My wife and I have "unknowingly" hiked some trails that were closed, on hindsight. Made for a nice, isolated hike. Seemed awfully safe, as nobody else was there.

We jsut came back from a few days of camping up in the Kern river. Our site is right off the river, now crowded only because it was during the week. Glad they kept it open. I have camped at Limeklin years ago. Its jsut like what you described, but not as secluded. Can't do that with kids now especially the wife. She's not too adventures like she was in her 20s.

Many of those camp sites along the cost is beautiful like that.

Try looking at HipCamp.com there might be a private campsite on some coastal ranch you'd like.
