Hitch mounted bike racks and the rear-ender accident.

well.

my brand new bike rack. havent even put my bike on it. was going to today to get my bike to the first tuneup.

my poor brand spanking new bike rack met a high school girl wearing a Prius. poor car looked like a sardine can opened up with a knife. it peeled the car right up to the windshield.

i got home thinking i was just going to get a new rack. a few $hundred. but in the cold bright light of morning, and the safety of being in my driveway. i found my bumper dented. dent was hidden by rack. i think the truck is fine besides that..but the other party would rather defer to insurance now. fine by me..i am going to get everything looked at.

do you think a tranny or driveshaft takes a beating? i was stopped, foot on my brake.

my poor truck.

Sorry to hear that you, your Taco, and your new bike rack got tagged. Hope you're OK. BTW, maybe this is nature's way of saying bicycling is no good for you.

Good thing your new bike wasn't on it. Another level of aggro to deal with.

Are you that guy who previously had the big long 4-foot bike rack sticking out of your trailer hitch?

I always thought they should have red paint or reflective tape somewhere.

Not saying that's what happened here, though.

^that is So-cal stylin'!

While somewhat drifting here, has anyone heard or tried the Seasucker bike rack? Weird name but I noticed Greg LeMond is even marketing it, though under his brand name. The suction cup thing sort of freaks me.

My thoughts exactly! Didn't you just drop a couple grand on a new bike?
Count your blessings!

May I presume your truck has a shell or cover that prevents you from mounting your bike in the bed? Install a mount in the bed that the front wheel attaches to (like what Joe Bob has.)

Please don't tell me mountain man/bow hunter/long distance biker dude is too lazy to crawl up into the bed of his truck!

I am just finishing up a 911 road trip from FL to the Smokies and of course, the Tail of the Dragon and brought my bike with me loaded up on the roof with the SeaSucker. No issues, though I didn't hit the twisties with it loaded up. Today working my way home thru rain most of the day, the bike was still on the roof when I got to the hotel. It does leave faint rings on the roof that will have to be polished out when I get home tomorrow. Pics of it installed when I get home.

You could likely fold the roof and suck the glass outta the back of that Cayman before the Seasucker mounts let go.

But the engineer in me says I'm still not using one.

Damn that sucks. You got the no-wheel-removal-necessary rack too, correct? Good thing your bike wasn't on it. Forgot to ask, everyone ok?

Sorry to hear. I keep an extra eye on the rear view mirror when the bike's on the rack. Carbon doesn't take impact very well

I noticed in Europe that racks on the back of vehicles have a very prominent marker like a slow moving vehicle sign.

oh man, sorry to hear. I mount my bike in the bed of my pickup, inside the 4Rummer, or roof mounted on my car. 911s aren't make to carry no stinking bicycles, so I don't do that.

Yakima. It took the hit well. Only thing that really broke was the knob that allows you to tilt it back and forth.
