I love when smart engineers get involved. E-fishing reel.

Friday I filled a PFD pocket with cut up fishing line. Had to cut out a back-lash. It only happened because as I cast, the lure lassoed my other rod standing up in the rod holder. What a horrific mess. The rod standing in storage was already knotted up. Why? Because it was an old hand-me-down reel a friend gave me. Both reels are same manufacturer. It would knot up at take off. This makes little sense. Baitcasters typically knot up when the lure slows down in flight and the reel maintains speed. They don’t knot up when the lure first starts accelerating. . Something was wrong with the reel. I went to the fishing store to re-spool the POS and a spare oldie-but-goodie. Figure the S hits the fan, I can put on spare reel and not have to do the paddle back in shame. I can usually cast decent. Not Friday. At the fishing store; never mutter to the kid spooling up your reels , “they need to invent a bait caster that won’t back-lash”. Don’t do it. Eyes forward- mouth shut. Because IF YOU DO mutter those words he will say to you. “Walk this way...” Some super genius Japanese engineer did just that. ELECTRONIC BRAKING!! It generates electricity while your casting and measures reel-spool RPM every 1/1000th of a second and eases on the brakes. No batteries. I drove home speechless. He showed me the Curado DC. (My old reel is the first gen Curado). It was like a hot chick was whispering in my ear. My wife and I got home, I sat on the couch for 5 minutes. My wife’s says, “you should drive my car if you go back to the fishing store”. Sccccrrrrreeeecccch! I bought the lower model. Same guts, different chassis. Not titanium or something. The SHIMANO SLX DC. I spent this morning hiking with the wife and dog. She wanted to walk and talk about our feelings. Okay. Me too! He feet got sore - no problem. Feet massage! Well. Wife-quality-time is done. I immediately tied on a practice plug, stood in the front yard, set the reel to #4 (most aggressive braking), faced into the wind, and let it rip. It will not backlash. It has this cool electric Brrrrrr sound as the lure casts away. I tied up my other rod. I’m a good 20 yards shorter in distance. What a game changer! I should buy another one. I’m bound to knot up my traditional reel going back and forth. Sheesh. I never thought I’d live to see the day the make a smart reel.

No. Funny. My wife put me on an allowance. I get a pre-set amount of no questions asked discretionary fund. It’s not much, but just enough to pick up a thicket or two without her flipping her lid. It works for us. I end up spending very little money on dumb stuff. It forces me to really think about it. Work my meager/humble budget. I cant go and buy guns...

Weird, my 20+ year old Shimano Calcutta 200 has a way to apply a tiny bit of drag while casting..a knob you manually adjust.. I never had many birds nests...granted the reel I have cost over $200 all those years ago... and it has Variable Brake System (VBS)

Those Bait casting reels (I think that's what they are called?) had ruined many a fishing trips for me in my younger days. I spend the whole day pulling the lines and my hair out because of back lash. No more borrowing those rod and reels from my friends. Bought a spinning reel. Still have it and used it only a few time in the past 30 years.

I'm with Vash. That's just cool. I have always had baitcast anxiety. Never legitimately cashed one. Maybe now? | ||
