				Which shower mixing valve?

			Let's talk shower mixing valves.

I need to go pick one out with trim etc, the contractor said go to build.com and pick one. Huh. Not too excited about that selection. So, recommendations of brands for quality? Not looking for anything fancy, just a basic good reliable system I won't have to be fiddling with in two years. All I know is cheaper delta home depot stuff. I may head over to Ferguson's plumbing supply or Biard & Crockett and see what they have but a heads up from BTDT would help to know what I'm looking at. https://www.ferguson.com/branch/orange-ca-plumbing https://www.bcpsi.com/parts/ tanks in advance. |

Do you want a shower and tub valve? Or just shower? And do you want a single mixing valve or two handle valve (separate hot and cold)?

Seems reviews like the two valve system vs. the single mixing valve. Pfister seems to be top leader. https://www.pfisterfaucets.com/bathroom/product/bedford-807-ws2bd-2-handle-shower-only-faucet?modelNumber=807-WS-2BDCC |

Tub/shower valves can be plumbed differently to use one of 2 heads. PITA when you can just buy the thing that screws into the threaded end of the shower riser and has its own valve for a wand. |

Delta has upped their game pretty well. Standardized valve now fits all models. Lifetime finish warranty, etc, build quality is really good. I use them in all my new construction and renovations. Never an issue.

I have Kohler appliances in my home, all covered with a lifetime warranty. They have sent me replacement parts when needed without dialogue. Love it!

I'm used to the single handle, have a delta valve in both baths and have had to replace the cartridges in both of them twice in 26 years. But now that I think about it, the old style with two valves would be simpler ...... Bottom line is the wife will decide what style for the most part, but I can say what brand. |

We install lots of Axor, Hans Grohe's higher end product. Of course a ton of Hans Grohe's regular stuff too. Graff and Newport Brass are also very good. I shy away from Kohler only because for a little more money, people can do better in terms of style, fit and finish. If you go to Ferguson's don't buy those foo-foo products made in France, GB, or places like that. They may look great and perform well, but getting a part is a PITA.

I have Axor in my masterbath, Newport in the other. Do you have a seat in the shower? think about having two showers in there? A hand held on the bench the other, a regular shower. I know, its illegal to do that now, but the plumbing (rough valve) can be hidden behind a marked tile all plumbed in place. Remove tile after final inspection and install trim and hook up shower. Its super convenient to not have to get up to change the selector on the other side of the shower. Safer too. Have main control near the entry and shower head coming out the other side. At initial turn on, you don't have to run for your life from the evil cold water because it comes from the other end. One step, shut off and walk out. Easy pleasy. |

Funny that all the plumbers at work recommend Moen. Maybe it is a future work thing for them?

I have Moen stuff in the new bath downstairs and it has been good for 5 years or so. Maybe a preemptive cartridge replacement before they seize in the housing. I have to change seats and washers on my old Price Pfister shower faucets. Bit of a pain but they are almost 30 years old and have been serviced every 10 years approximately. The same age bath sink faucet had cartridges changed out just a few years ago. Pfister sent those to me free of charge. That is pretty great service.
