strong august sun

Nothing but sunshine and temps in the 80's here for the last couple months.
Today...a slight wind.

Check out the turtle shadows.

Thanks Baz...they are easy to provide for and give a lot of enjoyment.
Truly low maintenance pets.
The pond that I built to house them has been the best project I ever did.

With the cooler nights (low 50's) as soon as the sun breaks into the pond..it's a mad scramble to get the best sunning position.
They won't give it up unless food is offered.

Lucky guys. It's another 100 degree day here and worse down below (we're at 3.5K ft. altitude). At least it got down to 69 lat night. Nobody who has lived here for decades has seen this kind of heat before (hight temps for such a drawn out period).

My garage is heated and I have a 3x3x4 rubbermaid stock tank in there.
I net the fish and turtles out into the rubber tank. They semi-hibernate until spring.
When I put them back outside..only takes a couple hours of sunshine and they are back to where they were the last summer.

Steve how did you obtain the turtles? I'd like to see if I can put some in my pond.

^^^ At least two of them came from mail order. theturtlesource.com sends half-dollar sized or larger turtles through the mail. They arrive in a small box ready to go. I recommend them.
http://theturtlesource.com/i.asp?id=100200300&p=Red-Eared-Slider-for-sale

A couple of the others were purchased from Petco.
All of them were juvenile size (half dollar) when I obtained them. The largest one is now as big as a dinner plate.
I tried to keep turtles found in the wild/road...doesn't work. They will die before they give up trying to escape.
