Rita wasn't a Cat 4. This will be a mid Cat 4, and Rita didn't have the storm surge this storm will bring

I'd like someone to explain to me how the Weather Channel color commentary on site manage to wear a baseball cap in a 75 mph+ wind/rain event?

Likely Lake Charles won’t exist after tomorrow. Good luck to anyone still there and my condolences to all who will undoubtedly be affected in bad ways for months to come.

You sound like the news reporters. Of course it will exist. The feds will spend billions in of tax dollars to rebuild the city. Just like Mexico City, FL hurricane a few years ago. Almost wiped away, and now rebuilding. The coastal cities get hammered every few years, and the feds spend billions to rebuild. The local spend millions as well, so it is not all fed money.

Just like virtually every foot of the Mississippi river has flooded, and will flood again and again, and get rebuilt.

it's the small towns south of Lake Charles that will not exist - some were rebuilt after Rita in ways that (are supposed to) make them easy to rebuild

i.e. the skeleton of the elevated house is tough and the roof & walls are designed to just get blown away then replaced

we'll see if that idea worked

there is a chemical plant on fire right now (chlorine); and there will surely e damage to a lot of oil & gas refineries and storage

there is a big LNG facility that took the eye dead on so it might be ground zero now - or maybe nothing happened

A BioLab chemicals plant, a subsidiary of privately held KIKCorp, is on fire now. It has historically manufactured chlorine-based products including toilet bowl tablets, chlorinating granules and biocides. According to eyewitness videos, thick smoke is billowing north across Interstate-10.

According to 2019 Louisiana state environmental regulatory documents, the BioLab site produces 115 million pounds per year of trichloroisocyanuric acid and disodium isocyanurate, biocides and disinfectants.

Heard some news & weather people saying they over-estimated the forecasting damage from storm surge in their reporting.

Shocker!

Hope everyone is hanging in there.....

Very lucky it wasn’t worse... “only” four COVID deaths associated with it. Terrible for those peoples’ families but could’ve been far worse.

I wonder if the reagents used to make it are worse. I guess we could shift to all oxygenated cleaning products - maybe the Europeans have done that (?).

we could require the plants that make hazardous items to be located in safer areas - away from storms, tornados, fires, and earthquakes - not much continent left but it's a big continent... well, I gotta go scrub out the sink with Comet

I've been wondering if the big LNG facility/port blew up - it would be a big one (but a nice clean explosion...)
