Just curious: so what's the etiquette? Were we offending the first guy who got onto the elevator?

Maybe not. It may just have been a situation that he didn't want to tolerate. It would be foolish to get in an elevator and expect to have it all to yourself and blame someone else if it doesn't happen.
Or he may have just been having a bad day.

I used to park on the 5th floor and worked on the bottom (actually in the basement). I took the stairs every day. I miss those days, was in shape.

My last corporate gig was in a 16 fl building... I never took the elevators and they paid me to do two full stairwell laps every day!

Well... I did 'em, and got paid...

Professional stair climber :D

I would never take the elevator and take the stairs for:
1: Personal safety since the virus can persist in the air for up to two hours (you never know who or what was in there before you). Even if you are masked, you are not 100% protected since the virus can enter through the eyes. Enclosed spaces, especially elevators are the worst.
2: To get the exercise. Sick people seldom take the stairs unless asymptomatic. The more fit, baring preexisting conditions, the better your chance for survival. C. Darwin

There were several of us stairway users in my last gig....

Fire drills (held regularly) were a hoot when they emptied the building by stairs....

It nearly killed the sofa-taters :D
