No, he doesn't get a lot of mention here. He was a drunken, drugged fool with a gift, until he got sick. Then, he became a prophet, and I mean that in the best way. He saw the light. But up until then, very hard to live with.

Kinda harsh.... but mebbe true.... I dunno? Any different than Jimi, Janis, Jerry, Keef, Eric, and a whole bunch more too long to list? WZ's live "Stand In The Fire" was in constant rotation back in my college daze four decades ago...

Other than werewolves of London I don’t know another one of his songs and don’t really care.
I don’t mean that harshly I’ve just never been a big fan even though I know a lot of people are. Tony |

Thanks Greg! A few more pop in my head too... Hank Williams, John Hiatt, SRV....consumed by demons, but... gifted output. At least some of them kicked the monkey off their backs eventually....

Lots of people gave Zevon a pass because he had talent. Otherwise he would be just another bum.
Richards is another story. He has said that his H habit was to even out all hoopla of being a famous rr star. He first started with the H in 69 70..especially after Altamont. To some extent he put on the persona of being a larger than life drug adled outlaw rr star. Which isnt his real persona he isnt a real outlaw. He never missed a performance and when busted in Toronto.and was facing some real jail time he cleaned up his act. Now he has a garden he putters around with. A real homebody. He has over the decades has become privledged. His children seemed to have turned out well. What Richards does care about is the music and especially his creation the RS. He watches that baby very carefully. It is his sound. If you watch him on stage he is listening to everything going on with all the muscians. Jagger takes care of the biz and promotion. Rod Stewart had a model ho rail road layout in his bsement.he built all the model building while on tour. Last edited by tabs; 08-31-2020 at 05:22 AM.. |

I like that version of Roland. It has a slower, more somber pace and tone that fits the subject and reflects Warren's diminishing days better than the more raucous original version.
I first heard of Warren from the cooler kids in high school and got into him in college when I had better access to music in the Walkman cassette tape era. My first live concert was seeing him at First Avenue in Minneapolis with one of my best college buddies and fellow Warren aficionado. I didn't know many other Warren Zevon fans, so it surprised me a little to see thousands of middle class middle American boys who all looked like me and dressed like me show up to his concert. When he played Rolland everyone was singing softly with him and a few waived cigarette lighters over their heads. It was surreal, almost like a campfire singalong, where with half closed eyes you could imagine the audience resting for the evening somewhere outside Stanleyville. Interestingly, according to Warren's wife's book, that concert appears to be the night Warren met and began his affair with Elanor Mondale. She was a local news reporter at the time and apparently met him back stage.
