A digital dash is not new but doing this way is. Very impressive!

You could do the same to a 911 but you'd need 5 round and of the right size high res screens. Or maybe you could build something slim that goes on the front of the dashboard.

But... Way more expensive than having you current gauges rebuilt.

Did you like the video? I thought it was really cool how you can replicate the stock gauges and then switch over to modern Lambo gauges.

Yeah, I liked the video. Anything with Tim in it is funny and educational. I also liked the extra feature of the rev counter working as a shift light.

But yes, what a really smart guy.

If you were sufficiently motivated you could build something like that using off the shelf parts.

For a 911... All you need are 5 Raspberry Pi's and 5 high res screens.
Or a long rectangular screen with one Raspberry Pi but getting a curved one to match a 911 dash may be all but impossible.

GPS, Full internet access and a whole host of audio video options are available today for the Raspberry Pi for not a lot of money. The only big issue is the inputs from the various sensors of the car but with a little research I'm sure you could solve that.

I use one with an additional digital audio card as a media player.
Here's my setup. The silver plug lead at the top is the optical audio out for the surround sound system.

Wonder if you can retrofit a Taycan dash and do your own squishy bits (software)? :D Trying to replicate the original dash in glass is one thing. For anything else, it could be a lot worse than analogue if you don't get the X in "UX" spot on.

My A class has the latest "MBUX" with digital dash. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but now when I get into a normal car, it feels like using a flip phone. I'm short so not having a dash hump in the sight line is a bonus (the classic 911 dash is actually really good in this regard too). One thing I find amusing is that if you get into a higher class MB now, you see the exact same dash. Good if you're an A class owner, perhaps less so if you own an S class (although I think the new S is getting the next gen MBUX). I guess this kind of "shared design language" always existed across the model range of MB/BMW cars, but now the class differences are not so obvious.

Do you run a screen with your Raspberry Pi setup? What model is it? I tried the original Model B as a streaming box but wasn't quite cutting it. Debating between a 4 or newer Pi or just going with a proper USFF.

In a sense, moderns cars with CAN bus might make things easier. For one, there is a lot of data already available through the OBD output. Obviously, with analogue cars it's a different challenge but a fun one :)

Mine is a "Raspberry Pi 3"... I run it into a big screen TV - HDMI. On occasion video may be jittery but that's because of the way the media has been compressed. I've been thinking about getting the new "4" but mine still works fine.

Just one thing... I wish there was an effective add on Wifi aerial. The built in one seems a bit weak.

I can admire the work and effort but I’m not really a fan. IMHO it’s more non-authentic, stupidly expensive electronic stuff to go wrong (as opposed to authentic, stupidly expensive mechanical stuff to go wrong I suppose...)

I think less is more when it comes to digital geegaws in vehicles (and aircraft). But I’m old fashioned like that.

Beautifully done and I applaud his effort all the same.
