Help ID these bugs - friend or foe?

I've been seeing multiple infestations in my side yard of these. Usually find them after a new 'hatch' when there seems to be millions of them in various immature stages.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Bill K

I love this forum.

Thanks svandamme.
Do you know if they will dissapear after the first frost?

Just seeing their nests/breeding ground is giving me the creeps.

Those things are the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE! I battle them every year and they are definitely winning this year.

As the linked article stated, they are also known as the Golden Rain tree bug. They first appeared on our Golden Rain tree 10+ years ago but have expanded their territory into our flower bed and yard all the way around our house.

Every time I spray there is a great "Disturbance In the Force" as massive numbers of them die off immediately. While it lasts for awhile, I have not found anything that is effective either long-term or ends the infestation entirely.

I wish you better luck than I have experienced.

why? they don't do any harm, they eat the seeds off those trees mentioned.
and as a result you don't have to weed out all the seedlings that sprout under the tree.

if you want to get rid of em, get rid of the tree.

I have used a few different things but TEMPO from the farm store has done the best so far. I look into Demand CS though. Thanks

1) My wife loves the Golden Rain tree so it must stay. Wife hates the insects so they need to go.

2) They would not be much of a nuisance if they stayed at the tree. It was only when they starting invading the house that it became a serious problem. I'm not sure you can grasp the 10's of thousands of these things that live in the tree and how much they like migrate. They generally walk but the adults are capable of flight and unexpected landings freak me out.
