E39s for sale?
I’m headed into a situation I haven’t had in over 20 years, a commute of less than 10 miles one way (vs. 35-40) and I’m thinking this might be a good time to scratch my itch.
I’ve checked here, mye28.com, ebay, BAT and craigslist. Any other sources for good post face lift 530i sport manual? |

No specific site other this one, a few other obvious sites. I love those, had a V-8 sport 6-speed with the M - optioned out side bits. I was the 3rd owner. Was one of less than 1300 units imported in 2001.

Yeah, sorry, I should have added that I’ve also looked at the more pedestrian sources too. I prefer the simplicity of the I-6. There are a few pitfalls with V8 that I’d rather avoid plus the 540 is more desirable in the sport trim I’m looking for and hence, out of my budget. They’re a very knowledgeable group of BMW guys and from the E12 to E39, it was a very linear progression. |

Awesome cars. I had a E39 528 for 10-15 years. Still going strong when I sold it with over 225k miles. I had a 2000 M5 as well. I wish I still had it. A lot of plastic in the engine compartment that is pretty brittle by now if its original- Like radiator, intake, chain guides, etc. But Id look at getting another if I was in the market for a car.

Speeder: 127k miles, fully documented, black on black, great upgrades, shifter, suspension, Dinan exhaust, head unit, speakers, good paint (not perfect but very good), excellent interior. I'm the 4th owner. 2nd owner purchased at 12K miles, sold at 100k miles. Short 3rd owner sold to me at 106K. I've owned it 2.5 years. Great car. In the process of detailing for sale. Retirement is reason for sale.

$10k 540i is out of his budget, so a $25k M5 is also.
OP where are you located? A clean E39 has gotten harder to find. What about an E46 ?

I’m still rocking the 03 540 Sport as my daily. 183k miles, a few radiators, thrust arms, alternators and lately a nuisance amount of oil leaks. Have had to have the M-parallels straightened 3 times... NY potholes. All in all a remarkable car with a very reasonable cost of ownership over those 17 years. It’s a drivers car.

The M5 has a lot of specific rubber parts for the engine. It can get a little pricey. The 540i Sport is a great trade off and much easier to live with.

Drove an '03 E39 540i-Mtech for 5 years. Great car with serious grunt. Wanted an M5, but didn't want to deal with manual transmission during business calls from the car. Sold it about 6 years ago. Might be the best daily I ever had and I still miss it, but my 2015 Cayenne diesel is closing the gap. Especially after averaging 74 mph and getting 31 mpg on a recent trip.
![]() The E39 still looks great to my eye, especially with the m-parallel wheels. The lack of bluetooth and dead pixels in the message displays get annoying, but there was a lot of forum support for the cars to help work around these issues. Probably even more now. Beware of VANOS issues and plastic bits wearing out in the engine bay.
