If the moon is rusting and falling to bits...

I'm sure the Chinese have got something to do with it.

No, it's that new liquid salt solution Wisconsin is using on the roads. They dump so much of it I have no doubt some of it reaches the moon.

The Moon may be part of both Earth and another rogue planet olliding. So rust could have formed on Earth if there was O2 and moisture present then.

A roughly Mars-sized planet collided with Earth billions of years ago. Some merged, some was expelled, forming the Moon. Which continued to orbit and became tidally locked to Earth.

May be responsible for the tilt of Earth's axis which causes the seasons that we experience.

IIRC, the collision was pre- O2 Earth.

O2 was produced as a waste product by "blue-green algae" - a significant metabolic innovation that killed off almost everything else on the planet (except for tetanus and a few other anaerobes). It was the greatest extinction in Earth history, but usually not counted as little is known that far back.

+1 on pre-O2. Wiki describes Earth as "proto-Earth" when impact occurred.

Cool factoid on introduction of oxygen.

I've read oil/petrol is from the early days, when plant material built up in massive condensed layers because there was no micro-bacteria present to break it down.

The Earth, and ourselves, are the result of unique circumstances.

Do you mean way back like 5000 years ago? Or just around the time the aliens built the pyramids?
