Microsoft has become agressive in their advertising
I didn't know HP Assistance was running.
Plus I thought all active settings are "Notify me first and let me choose". ![]() Using hardware/operating system/support to trick users into clicking through a menu and accepting default app changes? That is seriously low class....Microsoft. Perhaps even anti-competitive. As if changing default apps and adding Edge icons on the desktop wasn't enough. Technically it interferes with the user's ability to use the software as per the license agreement. Maybe it should be called HP Insistence.. ![]() And this morning the Operating System splash screen looked like this: Notice there is no "X" to close the window.. Trying to close the window from the taskbar resulted in the additional pop-up. There was no choice but to click through. ![]() At the end of the day it's about market-share and data collection. I can't uninstall Cortana, Edge (which collects data without being used), camera, or microphone.

I get that a lot too John.
I uncheck the boxes to let them know I don't want them setting things as default.

My wife just got a new Dell laptop that came with Windows 10 - I fscking hate it. Between the "telemetry" data collection, shovelware, and general *****ty UI, I am going to stick with Windows 7 as long as I can.

HP systems are full of HP stuff. I had one and deleted/uninstalled almost all of the HP stuff. I think I left one or two things.
M$ is also getting to be more of a pain in the rear. That's why I switched to Mac. The last Windows OS that I had was 7, and that's as far as I was willing to go.

Windows sucks more and more w each upgrade. Mac upgrades the OS but leaves the UI alone. Sort of like Porsche vs Corvette. I switched to Mac after 20 years of MS. Well worth it.

If I had known it was going to be such a PITA, I would have told her to get a Mac.

That's what I did. And when I wiped that old PC that was still working, I reinstalled Win 7 to let my son use it.

I didn't have any major problems with Win 7 or XP or Vista. They were all remarkably stable for me, and would often go months without needing to be rebooted or powering off. But the new UI in Win 8 and 10, bleh!

I find the incessant attempts at advertising really annoying. I suppose that's life in 2020. But if I spend money on a product--and not a small amount, either--I really don't appreciate the constant ads getting in the way of me doing whatever I'm trying to do. It's one thing if I'm not paying for a product, such as with Facebook or Yahoo. But if I'm paying for the product, I don't want the advertising garbage.

I've found that most marketing folks are unencumbered by morals or ethics.
Computer marketing people are the worst IMO |

There are ample alternatives to Windows 10. If you're somewhat capable of running commands in PowerShell and booting from external devices, you can go with the "Ameliorated" version of Windows 10. It requires multiple boots and scripts to execute: https://ameliorated.info/ The only issue is that Windows 10 inherently is designed to 'self heal' and continually install its feature updates (bloat/shovel/spy-ware).
Then there are alternatives like MacOS, Linux, etc.

And that's why they lost me. For a long time they did what I needed and they did it well, but they are obnoxious now, so screw 'em.

I updated my laptop tonight after months of not using it and a warning there were critical security issues.
Upon reboot, I got the same Edge screen the OP got. No where to close and the task manager said there were no programs running. I’ll take another look in the morning and hope it didn’t screw it up too bad. |

It is so over-the-top blatant it can't be missed. It is in-your-face. The others do the same thing (and much more in the case of gulag with active steering and censorship) but they do it behind the scenes. That is the more insidious reveal.. Personally, I think strategy this will backfire because consumers are generally hardened against "the hard sell". We get DVRs to skip through 30s-10m of pure mental push. We use all types of avoidance measures. Some even get rid of the box altogether. Ads had become loud, crass, and more demanding these days. "Buy this damnnit or you aren't a man" So what ever happened to that little singing skit which was created to entertain? I still remember those old ads well. Sing along and hum the tune throughout the day. That company is good. Or whatever. Now...product placement has become a negative experience. "We are the company destroying your otherwise great entertainment experience this afternoon." "Remember us." (oh I do remember)
