Wireless security cameras?
What’s the latest and greatest in wireless security cameras?
I have the Blink system I brought from our old house, but for the life of me, I can get it to connect with our WiFi system. Same router, modem, password, etc. but no dice. It shows the correct password, but it just won’t accept it and I’ve tried eleventy hundred times. So, I’m thinking it’s just old and I’ll get a new Blink system. Took a look and prices are higher than three years ago. So, what everyone is using now? Edit: any advice on getting the old system working? |
Have you tried deleting the camera from the computer and re-installing?
I've had to do that with my Nest Cams once...fixed the problem. |
I will be getting that Arlo Pro 3 soon.
Here is the thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1061721-security-camera-questions.html |
There must be a way to reset the Blink camera.
If it were me, I'd get an Arlo Pro 3. |
I’ve reset and unplugged/plugged in the synch every time I try to re-install it. I get the blue/green flashing light, select my WiFi and enter the password. The synch module light turns red after 20-30 seconds and game over.
One question I have is how do I pick the 2.4 or 5.0 ghz(?) WiFi. Looking at my phone, it doesn’t give me an option, but I see it on the router. It’s just one name. Could this be the problem? I’ll also unplug/plug in both the router and synch module tomorrow to see what happens. I have four cameras, so I’m not ready to give up yet and spend $3-400 clams. |
I had that problem recently. Just kept trying. Took like ten ! tries. Never did figure out what the issue was. Hasn’t recurred.
|
2.4 and 5 will have different SSID's. They might have a similar name but it's usually something like "A930RocketWIFI2.4" and "A930RocketWIFI5.0".
A device only capable of 2.4 wont see a 5.0 SSID so that shouldn't be a problem. |

I find it hard to believe I can enter the password wrong that many times. Especially when it shows the correct password. 🤬🤬🤬 The real reason I’m looking at them again, is because my wife’s Tahoe was broken into the other night. One of two in the neighborhood. They took some CD’s and her moms handicap placard. |
I’ve been happy with the Wyze cameras. They’re inexpensive and have clearer Video than the wired system at my office.
|
I'm using Ring. Very happy with the setup. Have 6 cameras so far mostly outdoors.
Sent from my Galaxy S20+ using Tapatalk |
Unless you named the 2.4 and 5Ghz differently, it would be the same ssid. It will automatically connect to the stronger signal. (2.4 the farther from the WiFi base.)
Are you sure you are typing your password correctly? Have you tried connecting anything else new? |
I have the Ring system. 3 cameras so far, each bought when they have one of the deals running.

Try "hard selecting" anything that might be negotiating between the two, renaming the SSIDs, device names, etc. Cuss at them both :D Good luck! |
Since you are trying to connect to the "old" network and not succeeding try renaming the SSID's and set everything up from scratch.
Last week I spent 3 days trying to fix something that should have been an easy fix. Got up Saturday morning and said **** it, started from scratch. Was done in 2 hours and problem gone. Sometimes trying to fix stuff is the long way around. |
I have 5 wyze cams. If they had the ability to be viewed from a desktop, they would be perfect.
|
Not sure I would want video and audio feeds from my home being sent to some random server somewhere out there in the Interweb perhaps even in one of your favorite countries overseas.
No one here have any concerns about privacy ? |

This. Highly doubtful that your cameras quit working in the move. Delete everything...start from scratch. |

If it doesn’t, I’ll be forced to read the directions or contact Blink... |
Are you sure they didn't get hacked ?
These devices are notorious for their lack of security. |

Make sure you're resetting all devices back to "factory defaults"... so nothing is cached, etc. Good luck! |
Your Blink sync module has a small hole with a reset button (use a paperclip or similar).

I have them up as a deterrent mostly. The evil red ring for the IR is obvious at night and may make someone think twice, maybe, I hope at least. As far as quality, unless you are running 4K cameras about all you'll get out of it is knowing what time some person showed up for shenanigans. Identifying them? Good luck with that. |
just reading the tail-end of this thread. If you are trying to connect to a 5ghz, rather than 2.4, this could cause the problem....

I would be more inclined to install fake cameras and some motion lights. |

Of course, I assume people here care about their privacy and do mind others spying on their homes. |

A few years ago I looked into all of the wireless systems as they are in theory easier to set up than a wired one. After a lot of looking, and NOT wanting a subscription based video storage I ended up with the DVR, and 4 cameras that all run off of Power over Ethernet, or PoE. The cat 5e cables and a switch in my desk cabinet, and drag cables up the wall and to each corner of the house. Dirty hot itchy work. Attic work is never fun.
In the end, I have a system that only cost the electricity to run it, and it stores a 8 days over the most boring video on the planet. My driveway, side yard, back yard and back door. I think the entire DVR and 4 cameras was about $500. I can add more cameras and they are color HD cameras with infrared B&W at night. It did let me capture the moment a pizza delivery guy smacked into the garden dry stack retaining wall. It did more damage to his mom's minivan than the wall. I picked up one stone, and placed it back into position. It just runs flawlessly 24/7/365. I never have bothered to put the system on the internet, so it is 100% hack proof and even if someone hacked it, they would die from boredom watching the yards at my house. Wow, there goes the dog to take go pee, look there, the dog chased the bird. Wow, a car drove down the street! |
Put this beside the car and turn your phone off so you can sleep all night.

It reminds me of the youtube of the guy who setup the fake UPS box on his doorstep with a (pellet-less) shotgun cartridge in it. |

I have four Arlo Pro 2 cameras and a doorbell, all outside. I was able to get close enough to power sources to have them all plugged in, I did have to add two outdoor outlets but it was worth it to not deal with batteries. Video is good, audio is good, the ability to talk back has a significant lag. The UI is pretty good but not perfect, despite my best efforts setting the activity zone my porch flag still sets off the doorbell alert sometimes, sometimes it still dings for a person when it’s my dog, you can’t change the alert tone so it sounds just like a text message, and it’s $10 per month per camera for them to continuously record, even with a local HD. Otherwise it only records the alert video and stores them for a week. Overall I’m happy and would probably get them again, I like that they aren’t tied to Amazon or Google who have a history of giving away or using camera data.

I hadn’t thought about in a long time, because it just sits there, but I have dash cam at the top of my windshield, next to the mirror. 🤪 I was parked facing out, so maybe I’ll see something.
I’ll download it this weekend and see what’s on it. |
I have used a 4 amp power supply with a 7 amp backup battery to power my WiFi/router and also the hub for my Hive system. My electricity meter box is on an external house wall (common practice in the UK)so it's vulnerable to possible interference by an intruder. All my PIRs and cameras are battery operated.

My trail camera has helped me figure out what's going on wrt wildlife in the area. These pics from last night shows me who was stealing my cat's food from the garage, for example.....

I have Ring on my house, I saw a guy the other day while RVing in Paso Robles who had a battery operated Ring doorbell on the side of his RV, he said it will go off when he's not with the RV, he uses the RV park wifi, or his own hot spot. He said a few times it has gone off on his phone and he's seen someone next to his RV checking what isn't locked down. He gets on his phone and says "what's up" to the doorbell and the person invariably says "Oh, I was just admiring your rig.
I may well get one from my RV, I've had a few things disappear in the middle of the night, at Public RV parks, stupid stuff like a cheap folding chair, and a $3 walmart solar light. |
