When you are buying a new German car
Life expectancy of the motors are 100000 miles at best, transmissions blow up around same time. New cars are not made like the older ones.
Am I right? Yes I sure am. |

My 2008 ML63 has 150,000 miles and only needed the intake gasket replaced ($460) since new.
Dammit, I better not have jinxed it!

No, dead wrong. I've never worn out a motor, or blown a tranny. And I've owned more than a few that went far beyond 100k.

Rubish! I put 187,000 miles on my Cayenne S, and half were towing a race car in am enclosed trailer. One water pump, and alternator at 175K, and a battery. That's it. It ran perfect when I gave it to charity.

Our MB R350's engine lasted 100K before it needed $10K in major work. We dumped it.

Depends on how its maintained.
Whats the factory oil change interval for BMW these days? 12K? They sure make a lot of money in service work..

Get an manual. And change the transmission early and frequently and they'll last. Most people never change the trans fluid. The fact they market them as lifetime fluid doesn't help.

I am generalizing of course. Solid examples:
2010 Audi A4 2.0T lost motor at 76k due to faulty piston rings. Apparently there are thousands of them with the same problem. Class action law suit! 2011 VW CC- timing tensioner failure- dealer maintained car. Lost motor, 46k on the clock. 2008 BMW 135i Convertible- blown turbo- 38k miles, dealer maintained. 2010 Audi A3 TDI- 2 high pressure fuel pumps. Last one blew up and took the whole fuel system out contaminating. 2006 VW GTI- 102000 miles- oil pump failure- engine out. 60+ years old owner anal about his maintenance. 2009 BMW M3- 45k- rod bearing failure- dealer maintained car. No modifications, daily driver. Not every single car will fail would be a rubbish statement. But in general they are likely to fail. How about electrical issues that would exceed the value of the vehicle? And Craig T if you just got away with what you have listed you either bought the car used with already some work done it or you are one lucky person. I am yet to see one Cayenne S (assuming by miles it is a 955) without coolant pipe, center drive shaft, fuel pump failure. I can go on and on and on... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My neighbor has a 2004 Cayenne S with 150k miles. Same thing...other then coils, carden, and tubes, zero issues. He told me yesterday he's going to be buried in it.

There is virtually no such thing as an unreliable motor today. Almost any car gets its first tuneup at 100K miles. Todays cars go 200K+ miles EASY. It is hard for me to accept that German cars do not keep up with this reality.

Are these all cars you owned or cars your repaired?
There are reliability reports and rankings. The Germans are in the middle field in those. I doubt they'd be there if they'd all blow up at under 100k miles. G |

If i went through all those as owner i would be horseback riding. Repaired. Lifespan of European engines have been declining over the past couple of decades. I am not saying all of them will blow up at 100000 miles but expecting anymore than that is being optimistic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I work on several customer cars like yours. They were the last of the breed. Do you expect a new Cayenne hybrid hitting 150k+ ? The whole point I am defending here they are not build to last, they are for short term objectives with the expectation of selling more new cars. Furthermore, in the past it was a common procedure for dealerships to warranty work on an engine. Now the trend is to replace even if it can be fixed (in complex scenarios). Why? Because they are more disposable. Same goes for transmissions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't know, look up "blown engine" on any new vehicle, and you will find them across the board on the interwebs. My Sequoia blew a transmission at just over 100k. Known bad design of planetary gear bearing on the first couple years. Toyota!
If you are a mechanic, you will only see blown stuff. Nobody healthy sees the doctor either ... G |

I think the warranty issue is due to lack of qualified techs. Turning a wrench and having a very detailed diagnostic mind set can't describe current dealer techs. As for cars being built for the short term. I can see that. Look at the jeep inline 6 4.0. Indestructible! Replaced with a v6....

My 2007 Jetta has 172,540 miles on the original water pump, second clutch, original trans fluid.
