Bok recommendation sought - car book for 11yo, ideally Mustangs, kinda technical

A good friend of mine visited last night with her kids on the way to Kansas from Rhode Island. One of her sons is into cars, so he enjoyed seeing my 911, looking through the car section of my bookshelf, got absorbed in my childhood copy of "Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975", etc.

Since he particularly likes Mustangs, I'd like to get him a book on them (ideally, though another car would also be OK) that is somewhat technical at a level that an 11-year-old can understand, but not overly so e.g. it is also narrative and has lots of good photos. Do any of you with experience with kids have any suggestions?

There's hundreds of books about the history of Stangs (and other vintage cars). Pictorials, descriptions of options, and they're cheap. I buy one every time I buy a specialty car.

There's also the 911SC Companion Book of which my old SC is featured in

I have a stash of various car magazines going back to the mind 50s. PM me your mailing address and I'll send a handful from the 50s, 60s and 70s for you to pass on. They won't be in awesome shape but they will be readable and enjoyable

I would recommend this book:

While it may seem daunting to an 11-yr-old since it's sooooo big, if you explain to him that he should know about the men behind FORD in order to better understand how the Mustang evolved, it might just peak his interest to read it.

If not for the Model T, where would we all be?

Thanks - that would indeed be daunting for him, but maybe worth sending him a copy. When he went to my bookshelf and started looking at my car / design / engineering books, the first one he pulled out was my copy of Milliken's 'Race Car Vehicle Dynamics' - yeah, that's gonna be a bit much for you, Ezra

When I was in 6th grade my carpool driver accidentally ran over my leg with her wagon on her first day of carpool, and later sent me a bunch of gifts, all 911-related (including a 1/12 Otaki kit of a '74 Carrera RS), and I somehow ended up with two copies of the Patrick McCarthy 911 book. I may send him one of those.

Here's a few I pulled off the shelf. I think any of these would be fun for an 11 year old gearhead. The popup book is called "Formula One Pack"; it's out of print but I think they're still available for pretty cheap on ebay. The Hayne's Manual is chock full of fun facts about F1. The technology is old, of course, but even old F1 tech is fascinating.

Not mustang related, but Richard Hammond wrote a pretty great book about cars, how they work, how they are designed, etc... all geared toward kids.

He should love it...
