Laptop batteries
Since I'm an old fart that doesn't like to throw anything that still works away, I'm looking for some help on a replacement battery for my daughter's old HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop.
As it sits right now, I can run it off the charger plugged into the wall. The battery is pretty much toast as it goes to >70% in less than a half hour just doing nothing on the computer. I got on Newegg and looked up batteries for it and prices seem to be all over the place. What is the low down on them? I'd like to have this as a machine to take with me when I travel so I can download pictures to it to empty my SD cards. I don't want to have to rely on finding a place to plug it in though, which would be the case now. Yes, it's old and running Win XP, but the HD is only about 1/3 full and I can empty more space if needed. What do you guys think? I don't have the money to just buy another laptop, but could come up with the money to buy a battery if it's less than say $50 or so. Would appreciate your comments and help.

The price difference for new factory batts is likely due to different capacities available (6 cell vs. 9 cell, etc.). Just beware of "cheap" replacement laptop batteries. Many are refurb jobs using the factory "shell", but with sub-par no-name Chinese cells, which are garbage. They are all over eBay and Amazon, and some of the more shady sellers try to pass them off as "new" factory batts.

So how do I tell the difference?
On that site I see two batteries, same description, side by side but with a $50 diff in price.

For work we buy the $25ish batteries for ProBooks on Amazon. They get replaced every 18 months same as the OEM battery. As long as it is rated the same voltage and mah you should be good.

Thanks Brent.
I'm not sure how much I'll ever use this laptop, but it would be nice to know it's ready to go if/when I do need it.

120 gig drive in the laptop. 4-32 gig sd cards is $22 on amazon.

As such, if it's not a factory-new unit, you are rolling the dice with what you are getting, unless the refub seller specfically states which cells they are using to rebuild the packs. So, I'd go with a seller/company that is upfront about which cells they use, and preferably one that also offers a decent warranty on their packs. Here are a couple refurb suppliers that use genuine Samsung cells, with a 2-year warranty: Standard. Extended. Standard. Extended. You can either go standard, or extended capacity if you don't mind a "hump" protruding from the bottom.

Definitely the preferred option, if the only concern is flash memory capacity (and no other need for the laptop otherwise). However, buying SD cards on Amazon is another mine-field.

I've got one ordered for the old backup I'm now using. ~$25.
(my primary laptop bricked) Windows or HP software keeps turning off this computer randomly probably as a protective measure. Hardware damage can happen. Today the battery readings are 100% perfect. Yesterday it was 2% toast. I've read that running down the LiON battery fully and then charging it helps. It shocks the system back to life.

When I started this one up yesterday, I had to reset the bios info as it thought it was back in '06. After setting the time straight, it fired up pretty good but the battery was at something less than 10%, can't recall exactly. Put on the charger and it came back to 100% but quickly fell off today. It may need some more 'exercising', we'll see.

I've had 2 of those HP and they last for years. Always bought cheap ebay batteries and never had a problem. I keep an old XP laptop for travel and works just fine for it's purpose.
