Heartworm medicine for dogs

I am 66, old school, and never gave one of my dogs heartworm prevention ever. Am I out of time? Is this a standard today?

If you're worried, get it tested while its still cold out and if the test comes back negative start it on heartworm pills as soon as the test results come back. We give our dog heartworm pills year round. We bought puppy the vet could only guess got them not much after birth and it was expensive to get him treated.

Are they outside, exposed to skeeters? If so, I do...cheap insurance for my buds. I think there is a MUCH cheaper alternative used by country folk, but can't recall.

....and it's serious, life threatening stuff.

Compared to the treatment once they have heartworms... not so much.
We use heartguard for our dog. We can usually find a coupon that cuts the cost down.
I think I spent about a lifetime supply on my Husky getting him treatment for heartworms.

$50 for heartguard plus for a small dog 1-25 pounds for a 12 month supply.

Search the archives....I'm almost certain it has been discussed here....a cheap alternative available from a farmer's agr. supply place etc.

What brings this up is that I am looking to adopt a third dog and two of the agencies require h /w testing and prevention. The others do not.

The medicine is ivermectin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivermectin you can buy it as chewable specifically made for dogs or take a product made for other animals and administer it as a liquid.

For example: https://www.amazon.com/Ivermectin-Sheep-Drench-8-oz/dp/B002BADTYG/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1520896577&sr=8-1&keywords=Ivermectin+Sheep+Drench

I would take heart worm serious, even in areas not considered high risk. If you develop a good regiment with a liquid treatment, it is cheap insurance.

Nope. Go to Tractor Supply. Buy a bottle of injectable Ivermectin (for cattle). A lifetime supply will, run you about $48 bux. Tastes terrible, so put 2-3 drops in food once a month for dog 50 to 100 lbs.

You can thank me later.

He won't be thanking you if his dog is a Collie or related breed.

I've been using Tri Heart for my dogs. No issues.

I'll stick with proven remedies, ill pass on homegrown, alternative stuff. My dogs are too important to me.

^^^^^^This is absolutely true of Collies or related 'sight' breeds. They are extremely sensitive to certain medications. If the dog is worth your time, energy and friendship, consult with a Vet.

Speaking of which - where is Dr Dogface lately?

I give Nalu Sentinel chewable tablets. He's 16 weeks and goes in for his last HIPP booster on Saturday. The boy is getting big!
