Gun Guys: Advice please on Remington 512 .22

Hi peeps.

this qualifies as a "Closet Find"

The gun was my fathers as a boy in PA. ( I just found it at my mother house where it lay in a closet for 40 years ). I remember shooting this at cans when i was a preteen.. likely only gun i have ever shot. ( so that is sum total of my gun experience )

Would like to rescue this for my son. The wood looks ok. i guess walnut. no cracks

outside of barrel is rusty at tip and near the imprinting of marks. no blueing left at all. the cocking mechanism seems to work along with /triggerpin. the ammo loads in a spring loaded tube which seems ok.

How do i get this refurbished ? Can any decent gun shop clean it and make sure its ok to use?

Thanks very much. I am clueless about this stuff.

Frank

Sounds like it just needs a good cleaning, a touch up of some bluing, and some lube and its ready to go.

Agree. Since you are not a “spoon” person, take it to a local gunsmith and have them look it over.

Don’t worry about the bluing, etc. until you get it up to speed and shoot it a bit.

Nice rifle, btw. We start all new shooters on bolt action .22 rifles, the best introduction to shooting imaginable.

Have fun.

Yes. Just take it to a gunsmith. I took my Stevens .22 that I haven't used in decades to an honest gunsmith. $20 to clean and lube it and make sure it works like new.

I certainly would not touch that stock. Love the patina.

Good cleaning and it should be good to go.

Walnut as good as that is hard to find today. The action looks very similar to my Remington "Targetmaster" single shot. It's 1940's vintage, is amazingly accurate.
It was my 12th birthday present...I'll never sell it.

i'd clean the heck out of the barrel and shoot it first.

hate to spend money on it if if will shoot a bullet around a corner. i cannot imagine a rimfire barrel worn out, but i have seen badly treated ones.

Our son just refurbed a 514 about in December 2018. He is going to be 11 this month and he did the work himself with supervision. Some products from Brownells and Birchwood-Casey. Leave as is and let yours do the work if he desires. Just keep it oiled so it doesn't get more rust.

Went from this:

A family relative had a remington .22 from the 30/40s. I can't recall the model. It sat in the gun rack in their cabin for years, put to work in the summers plinking cans. I got a deer opening day a few years ago, and was looking at 3+ days with nothing to do, so I took it down for some target shooting. I was shocked at how accurate it was. Thousands for rounds through it, bluing gone...tack driver.
