Panamera Fender Bender

Painful lesson. For several people.

In the grand scheme, this could have been much, much worse.

f this were a few decades ago, they would all be dead.
A 1980 Impala's safety equipment consists of...Lap belts. That's about it.

Crumple zones, air bags, anti-lock brakes, crash tests, yada yada have done wonders for stupid teens.

I highly doubt a 1980's Impala could reach the speed that Porsche was going in the distance it did.
Have you ever witnessed how fast a Panamera accelerates?
I did at Fontana one year. They had a 'drag strip' set up in the pit lane for people to try it out.
That Porsche saved those stupid teens so they can try harder next time they decide to take themselves out.

+1

That looked like a NASTY wreck. Yet, no fatalities and the door frames/pillars appeared to remain largely intact and not deformed. The article notes a passer-by pulling them out through a "poorly-functioning rear passenger door."
They should have been shocked that the rear passenger door still functioned at all. Kudos to Porsche vehicle design folks there...

Seems the teen driver is likely to lose his left leg based on that news video. Doesn't look like much is left of the car...

It all depends. It could be a 6cyl, a v8 or a V8TT.

They were 13 (or thereabouts). Not even remotely aware of the risks they were assuming.

Not sure why the kids thought going on a joyride was ok, but that’s none of my business...

That is the front of the frame / engine. The rest of the car is in the background.

Yeah, right. They probably thought it was like their video game where all they had to do is hit the reset button.

Not even I am dumb enough to think today's 13-14 yr olds aren't aware of the risks.

I really feel for the driver's dad. He wasn't smart enough to teach his kid that doing something like this was totally wrong in the first place. Doesn't make his family look very good.

Sorry guys, I don't have much sympathy for parents, or kids, when something like this happens. Being a parent brings certain responsibilities with it. If you're not going to step up and take them on and teach your kid what is right and what is wrong, you get to suffer the consequences. Now the dad may have to live with the fact of his kid loosing his leg. Tough life lesson there that's for sure.

To me, leaving a car like a Panamera available for a kid to get a hold of is tantamount to leaving a loaded gun out.

You're more than welcome to disagree with me if you want.

Just lucky they did not cause injury to anybody else, that is a pretty major intersection, even at 3am there would still be other cars around. They probably lost control on the streetcar tracks.

Yup, at least no one else got hurt.

Methinks they might have learned some kind of lesson — the very hard way.

I don't really know. Do stupid drivers who seriously injure themselves, or passengers subject to said stupidity relapse into that same moment of total irresponsibility?

I wonder if there is such a study similar to recidivism for former prisoners.

One can only hope they learned a lesson, Zeke. But, they haven't shown they have very many smarts so far so you never know what will happen.

A friend of mine lost his brother to a stupid teenage car accident.
I lost my best friend to a stupid teenage car accident.
I do feel sorry for the parents of all and the kids that were just along for the ride.
It happens. Keys out and someone has a brilliant idea to take the car for a spin.
They are kids and kids make stupid decision sometimes.
Most of us look back at our past and think, jeez I was lucky to get away with that (without biting it).
