Something I always find handy with free trials is this little trick. Change the date of your computer(bottom right of desktop screen with windows) forward 2 years, just before you install any free trial. Once installed, change the date back. Usually works, has always done so for me. But, if there is a free trial that limits the features...

Try downloading a program called Kazaa from www.kazaa.com
Search for the program you were using. Most of the time they have versions that have been 'tweaked', if you know what I mean.

Anthony.

YIKES!!!!!

Do yourself a favor and do NOT use Kazaa!!! This program is so loaded full of spy-ware and the like that you will practically lose control of your PC, not to mention the fact that you will be broadcasting your presence on the www to any/everybody who cares to look.

There is a much safer version at http://www.kazaalite.com.

Of course, it goes without saying that using "tweaked" versions of software which requires registration is illegal.

Along the same lines, I need an mpeg player other than windows media player. I installed it so I could view the HP ad - the older version of mplayer wouldn't work - but v9 is a skanky piece of bloatware with features I don't need, like 'skins' and 'license management', and they removed basic functionality, like being able to pause it with the space bar. And I'm not a fan of the non-standard interface - the whole freakin' concept of Windoze in the first place was a common look and feel.

Thom,

I don't have much experience with it, but WinAmp seems to be a pretty simple and diverse program for MPEG's WAV's, MP3's and the like.

Just change the default player to "mplayer2.exe" in all of your file associations (or whatever they're called these days). It'll use all of the MP9 codecs but has a much more basic interface (like MP6 or so).

On the other hand, after I installed MP9, the shell hangs every time one tries to log off. And Quicktime movies will only play in a browser window--the QT player dies immediately after it's started.

Computers suck. MS products suck. Apple products suck. Linux sucks, because geeks don't know how to write software that my computer illiterate wife could use. Instead of France, Syria, or North Korea, I think the military should stop off in Redmond, WA before heading home!

Tim,

Yes, but it doesn't seem to work properly... I think I've got some sort of confusion in my original encoding program.. I dunno... Movie maker just crashes all the time... Some times it works, but then there is no sound. Gotta have that racecar sound

I use BearShare for peer to peer, very happy with it, no spyware...

That worked - thanks!

Another ugly thing about the newer MP's is the onerous EULA, in which you basically give microsoft the right to do whatever they want to do to your system, and they don't have to ask perms or tell you first.

There's only a couple of apps I need to find for linux, and then it's bye-bye windoze

What are you looking for, exactly? Mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) is pretty good. It even handles Sorensen/QT. You can do your taxes online now w/ TaxCut or TurboTax, and there are plenty of good email clients out there. Like I said, though, ya gotta be computer literate. My wife can't handle the truth.
