Recommendations on Gear Oil for an Old Factory LSD (BMW)
Guys - what would you recommend for LSD Gear Oil for a factory LSD (clutch pack), the car is my 1979 BMW 635CSi?
I'm thinking something beyond just straight 75W90? Thoughts? And here is the recipient: ![]()

I think there's limited slip oil, and non-limited slip oil. Beyond that, I've never worried beyond that.

Call Redline oil- technical help. They'll recommend what best suits your application based on what was spec'd from BMW

How about Gl-5, (ltd. slip), gear oil in the viscosity called for in the owners manual?

Assuming it's a clutch-pack LSD, KISS = Redline 75W90 gear oil (the non "NS" version).
If you want to put a little more thought into it, you might bump it up to the 110 weight (or even 140), depending on intended use/temps/speeds/HP/etc. The higher weights will have a higher film strength strength and (shear) stability when at operating temp, and will typically be less noisy as well. The trade-off is more drag/less flow (potential sludge, hot spots, etc.). You can also go with the "NS" version of whichever weight you choose, and then add friction-modifier as needed to fine-tune the LSD. YMMV... |
