HELP - need information about importing to the US
 

Hi all,

My 993 resides in Luxembourg today and I am finally (after 13 years in the US), looking into importing it into the US.

Can anyone point me in the direction of good resources or people I could speak to about this process?

I am living in GA, so I am also interested in better understanding the tax implications of importing the car.

The car in question is a 1996 model, so would be coming in under the 25 year rule.

How close are you to Atlanta?

Porsche cars North America has their headquarters there. They might have some ideas and suggestions. I bet they ship lots of cars over on a regular basis. There should be a company they deal with that knows the needed steps.

You need a reputable customs broker who will arrange shipping. Do not pay anyone other than him, and via wire transfer. There are just too many scams out there. I used Fox Global Logistics when importing stuff from China. They set up the freight and delivery day.

What Rusnak said about customs broker. You can line up shipping yourself and have the customs broker take care of all the paperwork if you want. I'd look at the port you'll be shipping into, then check to see what customs brokers have offices there and make a call.

I’m a little unclear from your original post. Was the car built more than 25 years ago or slightly less than 25 years ago?

I gotta think that since you own it, you may not need a customs broker. Go to the port of entry you plan to import it at, speak with a customs (homeland security) agent and get the low down. This seems like a pretty simple deal having exported numerous vehicles from the US and imported them into Canada. Similarly, it was no big deal to import the old chump car 911 into the UK.

Is it your car from when you lived in Europe (for instance military deployment or diplomat), or did you buy a car overseas.
Was it registered in your name in Europe?

Makes a big difference as far as customs, taxes and import duties
