I could manage that all by myself. No need for high technology for me.

What's the pointing in having race cars race themselves.
Takes all the fun out of it if you can't race it yourself. Might as well skip the entire thing and watch a VR race with AI and no physical race at all. Much cheaper. Oh wait.. that's already possible in most race games : NOBODY CARES BOUT THAT NONSENSE

IDK, I've never had an interest in slot cars or anything remotely controlled. Maybe this thing is sent out 'off line' and is supposed to understand a slick spot on the track or a wind shift. I bet they have some parameter monitoring but it does take a driver to anticipate and make just-in-time adjustments.
I doubt I would even open an article about "driverless" race cars ( but I did here, LOL). |

Doubt they need autonomous race cars for that kind of R&D. For one thing, the street cars aren't designed for those levels of performance that racecars would do at those limits. If that was the goal, they would have to design a completely different vehicle with much different design specs so the limits actually raise way over what a normal car could ever do.. think somehow manage grip to G levels a human can't pull, acceleration well past 0-100 in half a sec.. Tron bike like cornering.. That technology does't even exist, so well what would they R&D with.. You don't need racing to test technology that doesn't exist, you need more R&D in fields that racing isn't even allowed to look at right now.. because they would be deemed unfair advantage and bad for racing sportsmanship. And another thing, crash tests are much better since they are much better at producing a controlled test where they can actually capture data from all sides with huge amount of sensors aimed at what they are testing..

I have to admit, I was thinking this was going to be a thread about the current Mercedes F1 car, which basically drives itself. They put a second rate Russian F3 (or was it F2?) pay driver, Nikita Mazepin, in the Silver Arrow he started throwing down Pole laps in the car. I think they dialed him back after he did that. I might be wrong, regardless, it made Mercedes drivers look bad, anyone can jump in the car and turn the same laps. Just looked it up, Valteri ran a best 1:15.4 is qualifying. (Q1) Nikita ran a 1:15.7 in practice good enough for pole that year as Valteri ran a 1:16.9 in Q3 and a 1:15.9 in Q2. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.barcelona-test-day-two-mazepin-fastest-on-first-mercedes-outing.AzcsqDHnzWma7VnU2QEwd.html https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-result/qualifying-results-2019-spanish-f1-grand-prix/
