Do all chainsaws leak fluids?
 

I have had my Husky chainsaw at least twenty years. The problem is whatever fluids I put in slowly leak out making a stinky mess.

Chainsaw oil leaks out. Gas leaks out. I see there is an O ring on the gas filler cap which probably should be replaced. Are these leaks common to all chainsaws particularly the chain oil? Your thoughts please?

The chain oil lubrication system on mine seems to be an open sieve that leaks out, especially if chainsaw left in weird orientation/ upside down or something.

The o ring might be your gas culprit.

Not all. I have 5... three are as dry as my 911 is .... nary a drop. Two mark their territory like an old Harley from the chain oil ;).

My husqvara leaks its chain lubricant everywhere every time I set it down. The shelf where I keep it is an oil soaked mess.
My sthil has never leaked a drop of any fluid

Now I'm watching a bunch of youtube videos on the stihl oiling system.
I've never paid one bit of attention to it. I bet if I gave it some tlc, it might get back to normal.

The gas is pushing out of the cap. Bar oil will leak in the same manner. Pressure leads to expansion, heat causes it. Cold, hot, cold, hot. Look at how bloated your gas can gets if there is no vent.

From what I have seen, yes. My Husky and my pal's Stihl both ooze chain oil. I suspect it is due to what is posted in #7 above.

My Husky is dry as toast.

My Husky leaks unless I store it upright bar facing the sky. My fathers Stihl's and all my buddies leak as well. I actually empty the bar oil out of it now after using it to prevent leaking.

another leaky bar oil stihl here. thing is if i lay it on it's side bar up it leaks from the cap, bar down it leaks from the oiling outlet. ive gone to laying plastic down where it sits on the self and wiping it down before use..

my Echo is pretty tight.

it leaked fuel once, but something cracked. shop said it was from running ethanol fuel. dunno. but i do know i dont run ethanol fuel anymore.

the oiler is thankfully tight.

My Husqy does as well. I keep it in a plastic tote. It cuts like a knife through butter though and starts right up.

That's why I keep my Stihl in it's carry case.

Stihl has a common problem with a plastic oil gallery plug that falls out. My Stihl leaks all its bar oil out around the rubber hose that exits the tank. One of these days it will be on the “what are you fixing” thread.

hard to lube the chain w/o leaking bar oil - you can use a stickier bar oil

if you are working in a sensitive area and worried about contaminating something, you can use vegetable oil - USFS has a bulletin about that (it will leak even more tho)

Chainsaw question... there is a 40yo stihl in my dads shop. Possible/worth it to restore? Probably has not run since the late 80s or early 90s.

My Poulan Pro (a cheapie saw) came with a hard plastic storage case.
I rarely use the saw, but when I do, there is always a layer of bar oil in the case.

I better look at it again...it might be a Porsche Pro

What model is it and as long as it's not totally worn out .... probably. You gotta pay big bucks these days to purchase a "real Stihl" .... the lower priced ones aren't built any better than a cheap Homelight from the 70s .... jmho.

Does it have a manual chain oiler? I grew up with dad's Homelights and a busy thumb :D.
