my paint system failed.

on my trucks shell. the rest of the truck looks fine for a 14 year (almost) truck. regular chips, dings..love taps.

but the topper paint looks like ass. i'm gonna run it by a body shop and see how much a quick respray will cost me. or look for a witty 2-foot long bumper sticker..

any DIY ideas that do not involve me overspraying everything in my garage?

its getting worse and worse.

Vinyl wrap. It probably wouldn't be too hard given that it is a reasonably simple shape.

There was a guy that did that with thinned Rustoleum white and dense foam roller.
Actually looked pretty good.

What failed? Did the clearcoat blister?

One of the states in the North East, (Delaware or New Jersey?) would fail a car inspection for "visible rust". This was something like 30 years ago. So everyone had duct tape covering any rust.

This thread is useless without pictures.

Back in the 80's my dad owned a 3/4 ton Chevy Suburban . It was a grey/silver color with a 454 it was a towing brute 😁 . For whatever reason the paint on the roof failed ☹️ . The paint on the rest of the truck was perfect .

My dad ( RIP ) was frugal with money so he sanded and feathered what was left on the roof and painted the entire roof with white Rust-Oleum . I don't remember if he thinned it or not but I think he did . I say that because he brushed and rolled it on and it flowed out great .

It looked really good and it was definitely cooler in the summer . My dad kept that Suburban for another 10 years and it looked as good the day he sold it as the day he painted it . I was amazed how well it held up .
