Accident and pricing
 

I was up in NH and someone hit my front bumper. As a result, I had a Porsche Certified antibody shop fix. New bumper, new radiator and condenser and bumper lip. While he was at it I told him to respray the hood and fix and imperfections on fenders and replace 2nd radiator since starting to corrode. Anyhow, how much does this impact the price when I go to sell? Car is better now than before but it’s been labeled as having accident. Not selling but just curious for curiosity sake.

If it is properly repaired (and there is no remaining damage), it shouldn't have much or any impact on the price.

I would think that with your photos of the damage, you would be able to sell the car as normal. I say this because you have proof of "minor" damage. I think the only issue would be that anyone knowing in advance of an accident might pass and not come by to see the car.

I can't see it would impact the resale price at all. It is not a major hit, just cosmetics and maintenance. You have a production car, not some rare ultra low mileage show car.

As long as it is fixed in a proper quality manner.

I know that the when someone brings up accident damage in the local PCA region facebook group, "diminished value" often gets mentioned, and I've even seen someone recommend a lawyer or something that specializes in that sort of thing.

I wouldn't think that for a regularly depreciating Porsche that's not likely to be collectible, that it would matter much unless it was still very new. IE, 2018 911 Turbo S or GT3RS with 20k miles gets hit, yeah, probably some diminished value. On the other hand, a standard 986 or 996, that's depreciated a fair amount already and has a bunch of miles and regular wear and tear, I can't imagine that it's going to make that much difference.

But, that's just my opinion.

Funny thing is that damage doesn't matter much in high-end cars either.

Would you pay less for a Porsche 917 just because it was in a (well-documented, televised) crash (while piloted by a famous racing driver)?

Would you pay less for a McLaren F1 that was crashed by a British celebrity and rebuilt at the factory?

Of course not!

It tends to matter most on low-end cars where damage can be the difference between an old car and a clunker, and on mid-to-high-end cars where the repairs may be suspect and there are enough out there to go get a better one.

That's not to say that people won't try to beat you up on price using this as an excuse when you go to sell.

Which will be virtually everyone who does their due-diligence and pulls a Carfax.
Assuming it was reported, it will always follow the car, and P-car buyers have a reputation for being nit-picking jerks. :D

IOW, I would always factor in "diminished value" from any prior accidents, and/or when negotiating settlements with insurance companies. YMMV.

It absolutely will affect the price. If you had two identical cars, but one had an accident report, do you think buyers would value them identically? No.
I have no idea what the discount will be, but there is zero chance in hell the discount is $0.
No matter how innocuous, the car now has a story, period. Even with the photo, any buyer knows the next buyer will hesitate, and adjust his offer accordingly.
The photos are one way to minimize the price hit. An alternative remedy would have been to just fix the bumper out of pocket for $1000.

And lie to the new buyer?

He had common wear parts replaced that got wonked, nose fixed and other panels spiffed up. Sounds like a good job, too.

I say some, but negligible value reduction. Less than $1k on a not too expensive car.

at what point does carfax list the damage as major. An insurance company was charged 1700 to replace the rear bumper cover and a few plastic bits on the back of my focus when I was rear ended at maybe 2mph.

I could see a bumper cover, radiator, condenser, coolant, refrigerant, etc turn into quite a large bill for a porsche.

Buyers will pay more for a clean Carfax, even with identical repairs.

Yes, it's not a collector car, but telling him Carfax will not affect resale is wrong.

I think that would knock $10-$20k off the price of the car. You may want to sell it cheap now. :D
