what is your LONGEST WEBEX meeting?
whoa.
i have a 5-day Webex meeting!! five days!!. 8am to NOON of this. i do not think i will make this! get this..they set up WEBEX so only our office desktops will so WE have to come to the office. i cant even crack open a beer, (AKA "pain go bye-bye juice") |
Wow! That's really messed up. I've been on conference calls troubleshooting stuff for 12+ hours before, but that's super rare, and certainly not planned.

What an absolutely unproductive miss-use of the tool. It's been three years since I had to even think about this stuff, but I remember study after study finding just how unproductive these remote meetings become after a very short amount of time on-line with one another. And believe me, by the nature of my work - requiring around the world, global collaboration in "real time" - I was exposed to far more than my fair share of this. At some point, we would just say "hold the phone - I'm coming over..." even if were in, say, Taipei...

Put your beer in the coffee mug. Come on!!! I thought you were clever.

A glass of "iced tea" (80 proof...) works as well. Just sayin'.

36 hours getting a customer back up after a hardware crash is my longest to date.
Some days the job is great, others... |

51 hours, 34 minutes. Upgrade gone bad, engineer forgot to change a key setting before hitting start and his QA missed it. Pooched a SQL database that had to be rebuilt.
|
well, at least they got the most boring presenters..
|
Ugh that’s brutal. I’ve now done two major full day design reviews online involving our customer, their prime, their customer, and a host of subsystem suppliers. Ugh.
|
I had to do a few 4 hour code classes that would have been in person, but of course were done online. I had a whole bunch of snacks on my left and the LEGO “Friends” coffee house set on my right- all off camera. I got the LEGO built over 4 of those classes and ate a bunch of delicious snacks! Got all the quizzes right.

I would Donald duck it

Our week long onsite API audit next week has gone virtual...
Engineering is up first... |
I refuse anything over an hour..
if they can't figure it out in an hour, it's not prepared, not productive and I can do better things then just sit around just sitting there for the sake of it. I walk out of meetings, ALL the time. get dragged in some kind of escalation meeting.. if it's not relevant to me, I'll interrupt and ask em if they have anything for me.. if not, I'll excuse myself and exit. I notice especially in the US, that some people have a tendency to live in calls.. they go from call to call, seemingly unable to refuse an invitation. Some server goes down, they call me "hey, there's a bridge call for this" I'm like : want me to fix something, or sit in that bridge call.. Personally i'de rather go and fix it.. And then they get all confused and apologetic.. half an hour later, i'll then enter that conf call that already has 4 hours ticking, and tell em they can just call it a day cause it's fixed. Good call guys, cya! |
Stijn, I like your style.
I’m much the same way, I work with a bunch of complicators that seem to think meetings are the way forward, the more people involved the better... it makes me crazy. |
