Best dog game ever
 

I find myself living with an engaging and active Black Mouth Cur.

As a working dog, I want to give him mental and physical stimulus to keep him from going nuts.

Here is a game I created.

It’s called “find it.”

Every morning, I put him in a sit/stay. I load a food bowl (or two) and hide them. Then I release him and he has to work for his meal. He loves it so much that he refuses to eat unless I hide it.

He is so good that I now have to plant decoys, drop distractions and think how I can outthink him!

Good times. Thought you might benefit from the idea.

Our dachshund would probably have excelled at that game and wanted to play it all day. He's old enough now that I would feel bad making him work for his food.

Our female dachshund is not smart enough to ever figure it out. She would sit in the living room and bark until fed. Our male dachshund would find the food but never understand the game, and would never sit-stay as I was hiding the food.

I do the same thing with my Dachshund. She knows all the hiding places.

Yeah, ours would also probably not sit/stay for long while food was involved. And his nose would find the food in very short order.

Our golden retriever loved playing outside with his blue ball. My wife and i would stand at opposite ends of the back yard and play keep away. We would toss the ball back and forth and he would try and take it way. During bad weather he still wanted to play, so we would play "hide the ball" I would make him sit still and I would walk around the house and hide the ball. Then I would walk up to him and say "where's your ball"? He would go crazy looking for that ball. Sometimes it would take him almost 1/2 hour, but wouldn't give up. Miss that dog.

I had a long haired Chihuahua that would have starved playing that game. She was so dumb about some things. We took our toy poodle and Abby, my Chihuahua to puppy school together. The teacher showed us a game where she put a dog treat on the floor and threw a towel over it while we held our dog. When I released the poodle she tore into the towel to get the treat. When we did it with Abby she just sat there and looked at me as if to say, "That's amazing! She made the treat go away!"

I used to do something similar with our old dog. When we would leave for work in the morning, I would hide several milk bones (dog treats) around our yard in various places. Sometimes 5-6 feet up a tree. This took away the partum depression when we would leave and kept her mind busy for hours.

my wife does the EXACT same game. she calls it "GO-FIND!"

Hey Sooner,
If your dog knows all the hiding spots that is when you need to turn up the creativity.

My easy hide spots are all long done. It is a challenge for me to keep the game working. A nice distraction during COVID times.

With her nose it makes little difference. She can smell a kibble from 10'. The ones under a pillow on the couch can sometimes fool her. If she misses that one I just say "Big jump" and she knows where to look.

I've been trying to get our cat to find the ball or at least retrieve it. No go. Cat's are so f###ing stupid.

LOL. That is funny. Now I have a vision of Vash running all over the house looking for his dinner. :D

You guys need to amp it up and hide the dog bowl when the dog isn't around.

My dog has become unbearable. She has learned that I hide the treats when she is outside. She now just runs outside and then immediately runs back inside and starts looking for the treats. When she doesn't find any she gives me this look "Where are they? Do you job!".

She has already done it 3 or 4 times this morning. Right now she is just laying on the floor staring up at me egging me on.

She is trying to train me!

My Heeler hides my food from me! :D

No...Cats are smarter than dogs. You call a dog, he comes to you. You call a cat, he decides whether or not he'll come to you.
