PayPal/credit card scam need advice

Yeah it looks like I was scammed ☹️. I made a purchase on 9/28 and used rewards $ from my CC through PayPal for the purchase . Fortunately it's only $40.98 . About an hour after the purchase I received an email from CC company asking if I made a purchase of $6.14 as they think it is fraudulent . I immediately started a fraud claim for the 6.14 as that was a charge against my CC vs rewards dollars .

My CC company closed/froze the account and is sending me a new card . So far so good but here's where it gets weird . When I was on the phone with CC company I questioned how do I get my rewards money back ? The woman I was speaking to was baffled by the question and said she had never dealt with that before . Her suggestion was wait a few days to see if the vendor comes through and ships what I ordered .

I have had no communication with the seller and I don't expect to hear anything from him . The scam email attached to the 6.14 charge is only one or two characters different than the sellers email so I believe both are scams . So do I go back to CC company to fight this ? Or do I start a dispute with PayPal ? I am thankful it's not a lot of money but it still pi$$es me off 😡. I am usually smarter than this but the bad guys got me this time .

I'd get them back on the phone right now! Make sure they document the call but they should anyway.

You're protected by US law so I wouldn't worry too much.

Normally I go all in medieval when dealing with crap like this because it's not the money, it's the principal.

But even I might let this one go.

$6.14 is worth how much of my time and frustration for what is likely a forgone conclusion?

It's a small enough amount that I can chalk it up to "Scott was stupid tax".

Mrs. Lee just found out the hard way that someone used her ID to open an account with Verizon to buy an iPhone and then skip out on the bill. This happened in May 2020 and we just found out about it two days ago when she got a ridiculous interest rate offer on a car loan application. When she looked at her credit report, it was on there. Never one attempt from Verizon or their collections agency to contact her before sticking it on her credit report and taking her score down 100 pts.

The $6.14 is already taken care off , it's the $40.98 that is in limbo.

Just got off the phone with CC company . This rep told me the same thing as the one on 9/28 .......... they can't see the " rewards transaction " on their computer screen . I can see it when I log into my online account but I have to drill down into the " rewards tab " . Today's rep suggested to get on the phone with PayPal but they are west coast so I have to wait for them to wake up 😁.

Well now I know who is responsible for all the BS I have to go through when trying to make a freaking payment on my card accounts. Password not recognized....password not strong enough....we need an upper case plus one of the following marks.......

Get it together folks....you are making life a PITA!

If you used paypal can't you file a claim against the seller? Hopefully you paid for goods or service and not send to a friend.

I'd just file a claim and see what happens.

Straight up legit purchase from my side . The hang up butt scratch 😋 seems to revolve around the funds were " rewards " dollars vs credit card purchase if that makes sense .

Shouldn't make any difference unless PP somehow voids buyer protection because you used rewards rather than putting it on the card.

2. Your order never arrives.

All you have to do is log in to your account and open a dispute to get the refund process started. If you made the purchase on eBay, start here instead.

Stick a fork in this one it is done 😁 . Been chatting with PayPal explaining the situation and they made sure the guy didn't get paid AND they credited my rewards $$$ back into my rewards account . I just checked my CC account and it's there . This was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be but not complaining . I am also a little wiser for future purchases ........... I hope 😋

The 6.14 was a test to see if you were paying attention. If it went unnoticed they would have bled your account dry.

I believe you are right , I wonder what triggered my CC company to think a six dollar charge may be fraudulent ? But I am glad they noticed and questioned it . I hate thieves 😡

Hard to say .......... two websites were eventually snuffed out but I prefer not to show the links . All emails linked to my fraudulent charges were conghuanghao980@xxxxx . When I initially received the confirmation from PayPal the sellers info had some Chinese letters/symbols in it which was a clue . You know the rest 😁

It might have been the location of where the charge was made; I recently had some scumbag lift my card info and attempt a $1.00 test charge at a gas station in a state far from TexASS, when I had made local charges hours earlier, so the CC fraud alert was triggered.

It could also have been the amount charged was way outside of your typical card usage - I've never made a charge for an amount so small, and likely your haven't either.

$560 charged on my Discover at tires.com. There is no "tires.com," it is redirected to Americas Tire.

Anyway, I got the credit for the charges. Discover's problem.

Funny, I didn't know there wasn't a website by that domain when I called back after getting an alert text. If I did, I could have said, "No such place."

Everything is effed up and I'm slowly backing away. I keep less than $100 in checking.
