Old stamps and coins?

I have coins and stamps from my father who passed away 20 years ago. I guess it was a thing to collect in the 60’s.
I think he was in a stamp club where they mail you new ones every month.
The coins are mostly commemorative. Lots of silver ones from Canadian centennial in 1967.
Any value to this stuff? Rod needs new tires on his 911 😃

I too have my dads stamp collection but there is no real value in it other than sentimental. I also have some of his war time Japanese scrip.

some may be. Find a coin/stamp dealer and have them look at them. Won't cost you a dime.

When my parents passed away we took all my pops (some were mine) coins to a dealer. Nearly $3000. If we would have sold ourselves we could have nearly doubled the price but we didn't want to delay the estate sale.

Ya. I’m not sentimental, just decluttering.
Who wouldn’t want stamps of Hitler? Lol
Silver coins are probably worth more melted down

You never know.

Dad had a 1916 D dime that we got $1000. Also, a 1909 s vdp penny that was a forgery. He had rolls of dimes that were worth a buck a coin.

Find a dealer. They mighr not be worth anything. Might have a tidy sum.

I went through this a few years ago.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1004714-stamps.html

I joined https://findyourstampsvalue.com/ for a month and spent a few hours every weekend poking around. Great site.

Decent values but unless there is a buyer, you'll be at 25% tops on any valuation.

It is fun to do, however.

I keep all the coins I can.

Went through this as well, 60 yr plus stamp collection and couldnt give it away. I did keep the stamp ball my grandfather made. Just a bit larger than a softball.

Sounds like I need to catalog all this stuff and find some buyers.
Maybe I’ll just stick them back in the box and let my kids deal with it when I cack.

From my short time working in the estate sale industry, 99% of stamps are worthless and 90% of coins are slightly more than worthless.

Great example of sliding nostalgia window.
Model T's and 1957 Chevy's were also hotly collectible back in decades past.
Eventually, stuff becomes worthless as the collectors all pass on.

Wouldn’t coins be worth at least their face value?

Ya, that's what the "slightly more than worthless" part meant

The silver coins should have some value significantly above face. Even if no silver in the mix .... coins are $. On three occassions, I've taken my "modern coin collection" to the credit union for counting and bucks... well over $1,000 each time .

Stamps... are they "Green Stamps"? Anyone remember those?

Ahhh, but if a stamp happens to fall in that 1% or a coin in that 10%....

The problem is every one who finds an old collection thinks all of their stuff fall in those categories!

Funny thing is it's never good enough. One couple I worked with ended up getting about $2500 for their grandfather's collection and they were very disappointed, when that was about $2450 more than most collections were worth.

My concern is not knowing really what I have.
Probably squat, but if there is diamond it there, would the buyer tell me?

I would think you need to pay "an expert" to determine their value for a set fee, knowing that you're not going to sell them anything.

Are people honest? Some are, some aren't, and a big $$$ "find" isn't when you want to find out which... but you would never know .

Put a "real coin of value" in the mix .... test them .

You can research coin values online. I have a few that I've researched but don't recall what site I used to appraise them.

Checking online minimum value is melt value.
Canadian dollar coin pre 1967 is around $20.00.
Selling on eBay for a bit more.
There are quite a few of them. Maybe even enough for a set R88R's.
Isn't it illegal to melt down coins?
