PC Laptop advice?

I might need to replace my current laptop, so I'm thinking of getting one now while I have time to transfer the files, etc. I'd like a 15.6" or larger screen, a good amount of memory, numeric keypad. I don't use it for gaming- just work, surfing, watching videos. A high priority would be for a reliable and long lasting PC laptop. Best Buy is convenient and local, but I'd be happy to go with Dell, IBM, or whoever builds good units. Is there good stuff on this list of results? I'd be happier in the $400-700 range. I suspect it's heavy duty gaming laptops that are a lot more. Any suggestions on brand and features?

I am not fluent in computers at all: I have a two Macs and a second display monitor and have been the happy recipient of the greater knowledge on this board.

That said:

Whatever you do, get a second monitor ($100) and a wireless keyboard.

Merry Christmas from me, spending your money!

I'd avoid Dell from my personal experience We've bought around 8 over the years and they all turned into POS's within 2 years of home only use. You'd think we would have learned. Well, I have.

In that price range, I'd seriously consider looking for an off-lease corporate laptop. I paid $350 for a gently-used Lenovo Thinkpad with 16 gigs of ram this year and it's been rock solid.

I can go to around $1,500 if necessary- I just don't want to put a lot of money into some gaming monster that I'll never use as such.

I like Zeke's advice on avoiding Dell, even though I thought that would have been a good one. 8 out of 8 is incredible, and I'd like this thing to last 5+ years.

I'd like a 1TB+ hard drive. That seems to eliminate IBM/Lenovo. I had an HP before which lasted and this MSi has been good until now. I see ASUS is well regarded.

I don't suppose anybody sells these things without a bunch of bloatware on them. I do have a guy who will remove it all before it goes online, although I wonder how long a "clean start" really lasts. He hooks me up with other stuff which makes his fee palatable.

I had a good one. Looks like Toshiba is no longer making laptops, though.

Get a business laptop. I have a Dell that is 15 years old and still going and the One I use daily is 10 years old. The business level laptops are built much better than the standard ones.

I picked up a ACER years ago to do some CAD work, really crap screen, ended up purchasing a monitor to plug it into, my Mac mini uses it now. Pay attention to the screen quality also.

Trying to check Dell business laptops, I see this at 65% off with the 1TB upgrade. Thoughts?

m2 drive is faster then the sata SShd by a lot and huge over spinner load times sec vs min

they are the newish ghimic so the older models are less likely to have an m2 slot or card

I have a Dell Latitude that is still a monster after 7 years of daily use.
You can save huge money if you buy used.
Get an i7, 16GB, Win10 for like $300
and swap in the 1TB SSD for $100

Or try a used Thinkpad W540 for about the same price range.
Used Thinkpad P50 for $600 or so

+100
I had a Dell that was great but after that they are trash and their customer service/tech support makes the DMV look like a nice place to visit.
HP is no better.

Asus and Lenovo are quality at reasonable prices. I have one of each.

That has some nice specs. Only a 14" screen though.
