We will be using a ham bone tomorrow to make soup with navy beans, kale and some other stuff.

Many of the old recipes that call for beans or peas, with ham bones or just meat, are great.
A welcome change from stuffing ourselves with meat and potatoes over the holidays.

That looks amazing with the corn bread! I fry up some bacon and add it to canned pea soup, always makes it so much better.

MrsWD fries half a pound of bacon in a cast iron skillet. She mixes up some cornbread batter and when the bacon is done she takes it out and pours the cornbread batter in with the bacon grease. Prolly 200 calories and half a heart attack per bite, but damn cornbread with that crunchy bacon grease crust is good with ham and beans.

Why is it that the really good stuff is so darn deadly?

My mother used to tell me that when growing up..her mother would feed the family breakfast with bacon and eggs. The bacon grease was always fought over. Dipped in homemade bread, it was a delicacy. They grew up fine on the bacon fat.

Def not good for sedentary people.

I have long been a proponent of eating fatty and greasy foods. The grease lines your arteries and since it's so slippery, it is a lubricant after all, your artery walls coefficient of friction decreases essentially making blood go through them faster and more efficiently. Bacon grease is definitely heart healthy!

^^^ Sounds good to me!

I don't use them often but my bio/biochem degrees do come in handy now and again. :D

^^^ All I know is that bacon grease tastes great...and it makes everything move freely after breakfast...lol

My mom would fry bacon and then drop the eggs in the bacon grease. She would spoon the hot grease over the eggs to cook the tops of the sunny side up eggs. That was all I knew about bacon and eggs for years.
As an adult I was making breakfast for a girlfriend using my mom's method and she was appalled! You would have thought I was trying to poison her.

Shaun is right. It's basic fluid dynamics.
