Electric bicycle batteries.

I'm considering buying my sister a second hand electric bicycle that hasn't done many miles but is about three years old. Or am I buying someone else's used up junk? The battery is a 36v15.6ah Samsung advanced lithium ion.

I'm just suspicious of buying anything second hand that has a battery

My Propella's battery is only a year old...so I can't say how long it will last.
I see on their website that a new battery is $250

Propella arrived today!

I have two second hand specialized e-bikes.

No regrets.

Mr Bill, There are lots of EBike companies in New Zealand.
- I'm sure you'd find a reasonably priced replacement if needed & there are lots of options.

What do you know about the bike? Is it a conversion or ready made?

A bit of an old lady's bike, but she is an old lady LOL She takes her fluffy white dog everywhere so she may be able to train it to stay in the basket.

That looks cool... Note the battery in the rear rack. Really easy to replace with a generic one if needed. Also if anything goes wrong with the hub motor in the rear wheel that's also easy (cheap) to replace. You can just buy a whole new wheel with hub motor.

The bikes with the built in Bosche/Shimano motor & gearbox at the pedals are expensive!

Best Advise - Buy a quality piece.
Three years is not much, but be aware. have the battery and motor checked out by a qualified tech.
You don't want a former rental bike from the Coast.

My eight-year old ebike is officially Too Old.
Parts are breaking, parts no longer available.

JB Weld and a Macgyver DVD = it's still running.

My wife just broke 5000 miles commuting with her 36V 10.4Ah electric bike. Battery is still functional, but not as strong as before. She uses roughly 50% of battery on each roundtrip.

Trick is to keep it topped after each use and avoid cycling the battery 100%. (there is no memory effect in Lithium batteries and they wear out from deep discharge).

Sometimes the battery is just a holder for an array stack of smaller standard batteries.
Take it apart, test all, replace a few, and put back together again.

That is true with Prius drive cycle batteries. Cost is a few hundred instead of thousands.

If you bought one of these you could easily rebuild any rechargeable battery pack that was tired.
The individual cells can be expensive but that depends on their country of origin.

That's quite slick Peter. I tried manually soldering a few 18650 batteries for an aging bike light system and killed them LOL
