Nope, that is pretty much it. When a male's life expectancy in the US was about 48 years back around the year 1900, notching another year was a much bigger deal.

HELL yes it's special!!

first we survived another year, and i look forward to the next one. rinse repeat.

i enjoy the festive feeling, even if it is in my own mind. i like it better than my birthday.

we have a lot of "just another days". enough to go around. i enjoy the special ones. of course i am not a debbie downer. :)

POTY!

VASH for President, or at least Mr Congeniality.

cabmandone 12-31-2020 09:15 AM

Vash likes it better than his own birthday because his own birthday reminds him that HE'S getting another year older and no one wants to be reminded of that. I think sometime after 21 (depending on your current age) birthdays just become another day and a reminder that you're one year closer to being in the ground.

Happy thoughts! :D

We loose the senate, there might not be a free country and a free Merica any more, so 2 people could mean our demise. Hate to be a downer, but folks are too complacent in current activities, and this is the outcome. Merica, Trump 2024! Impeach Biden!

Don't forget the day you celebrate the most...Cinco de Mayo..funny how 'Mericans celebrate a holiday that isn't even a real Mexican holiday..lol

There is a special Politacs and Relgion Forum (PARF) just for those kinds of sentiments. Use it.

I like it because it is the first month where our days start to show the lengthening time of daylight.
A couple days ago, the weatherman said we had already gained 10 minutes of daylight.
December is a depressing month to me....short hours of daylight and prob our cloudiest month.

Y2K... 21 years ago but remember it like yesterday! The run on generators and everything else only to end up a dud.

I think there were some local bus ticket generator problems in Italy, IIRC.

+1 one that.

To me, it's a moment to reflect on the year past (accomplishments and failures) and to look forward to the possibilities a new year brings.

I'm always up well past midnight (everyday), so nothing major there. Can't remember the last time wife stayed up to midnight for New Years. She swears she's going to tonight, though.

stevej37 12-31-2020 12:37 PM

I never try to make it to midnight.
Why?? Does something magical happen then?

Where I live, the world's quite quiet at that time of night. I enjoy the peace and quiet.

VINMAN 12-31-2020 12:50 PM

Totally agree with the OP.

While I get the whole New year celebration thing, the whole " new year" thing is a load of crap. Things are not going to magically change at 00:01 hrs on Jan 1st. Especially the "new year, new me" thing. Life runs second by second. Not calendar year to calendar year. Only thing different is, I gotta remember to change that last digit when I date something! That should take a month or two :D

No, I'm not being a miserable bastid. I still enjoy celebrating it with my friends and family like most. Nobody likes a good party more than me. I just look at differently.

On that note wishing all you guys a Happy New year!

stevej37 12-31-2020 12:53 PM

I'm wishing everyone a Happy New 10 Years!

If you don't want to celebrate a holiday, don't.

First off there are differences in some holidays. Religious ones have special meaning to those who believe. 4th of July has a patriotic/proud to be a citizen meaning. We are commemorating an event. New Years? Its just a calendar change. That said, there is nothing wrong with having an excuse to party (did plenty in my younger and more foolish years) but I celebrate every day on this earth. Remember, we are all going to be room temperature some day. Celebrate 1/2 and 4/9 and... just as much.

Over what time frame? Maybe a month but not since winter solstice. Sunrise Sunset Calendar - USA Home Page

So, Happy New Year to all. Remember don't drink and drive! Also remember it is really bad to drink and drive if you didn't bring a car.

stevej37 12-31-2020 02:43 PM

^^^ I guess my weatherman knows less than you.

wdfifteen 12-31-2020 04:39 PM

With 365 days in the year why should so many of them be ordinary? We need MORE reasons to celebrate being alive. March 14 should be a national holiday!!

The holidays that amuse me are the "Hallmark" holidays like Valentines day, and Sweetest day where retail therapy shows how much you care !

Porsche-O-Phile 12-31-2020 06:00 PM

Completely arbitrary. As Bono says, “...nothing changes on New Years Day...”

But it’s still kinda fun to celebrate anyway - even if it’s just kinda “because”.

Serious question: why is Jan 1 so special?

Just wanted a day off.
