Could NOT figure out where it was originating. Instead of old school circuit by circuit detective work I gave the flir a try.

Hooked up the battery after the car was cold and disconnected overnight. Removed the battery connection after about 10 seconds. Powered up the flir. Following the glowing orange wire like a highway from the fuse block, under the dash, through the tunnel, up and out along the firewall and finally out to the license plate lights had me laughing out loud. It was oddly satisfying. A small area of 46 year old insulation had rubbed through and was contacting the engine lid near the license plate illumination lights.

Problem solved in 5 minutes.

I'm a fan.

That's very cool (no pun intended)!

I have a Milwaukee M12 thermal imaging camera at work. I'm less than impressed with the image quality compared to the high dollar cameras I've seen.

Even though it doesn't work that well, I'm still pissed I forgot to take it to my last 930 dyno run so I could look for hot/cold spots on my intercooler.

Same resolution as the one that I got, but the Home Depot price is $150 more than I paid via Amazon. I think one of the benefits of the FLIR unit is that it overlays the IR photo over a higher res visual light photo to give you the effect of a higher res IR image.

I was gonna buy one after I had my energy audit done. The auditor had a pretty high end camera. I was afraid I'd be disappointed if I went the phone attachment route.

Ya I saw them using one in our building chasing a water leak. Was crazy how clear you could see it in the ceiling.

I’d like to have one, but it’d just be a really expensive toy after about 1 project. 🤣

The FLIR unit that I have shows the actual temperatures in addition to just the infrared image.

This was useful in communicating to my corporate franchisor things relating to food temperature and safety. I basically sent the FLIR photo showing temperatures and let them know I'm making my own changes due to food safety issues and if they don't like it then they can send me an indemnity letter.

3 years later (1965), Col. Veghte did surface temps of birds with the Barnes unit

The one that I have has the ability to create a central spot meter of either a small spot or slightly larger circle or square area, and then include the actual temp of that area.
