We have neighbors that feed them, and we have people who goes to this ledge jsut to watch then in the open hill side thinking they are cute. Yet they btich about the coyotes taking their dogs and cats for a simple snack but complain that they were here first before us. Same siht, different days. They are a pest, PERIOD.

I second the compound bow.
No report from a rifle shot, arrows (I still use alum with expanding broadheads) you can reuse even with a moderate damage.

Besides with a .22 you need the bullet to expand and it might have too much velocity to do that, a broadhead is short range but will absolutely spend all it's force which is the more humane option if you have the skill and range to do it.

No Coyotes here yet but Fisher Cats and Groundhogs (that dig holes into the coop for other animals)

Gotta lead them outside city limits where it's okay to discharge a weapon, then grab your Mossberg w/a stock-feed handle. Or just leave them be, unless you have small kids or pets out doors, otherwise, really, they will keep their distance.

Well then ... If I lived in CA....

I'd listen to Steely Dan and hit 'em on my motorcycle :D

Noooo .... not for a 'yote... not even .22lr.

They are not welcomed on our farm or at my house...I will dispatch them with no remorse. On the farm in south Ga, they have wiped out our quail population. In the mountains, the bastards are hell on young deer and there are no more grouse in our area. THEY ARE NOT CUTE!

What is that farmer's saying?
3 s's?
Shoot
Shovel
Silence

They are desperate enough for food around here they will run in packs. I think some of that has to do with the wolf population moving in.

We have a problem here with dogs joining the Yote packs.

Coyotes are not protected in California in any way. Perfectly legal to shoot and kill as long as you follow local fire arm ordinances

saw a very interesting documentary on the coywolf and how it likely came about. it was more due to declining eastern wolf populations than the coyote's activity.

If you have neighbors feeding coyote or other wild game, report their dumb asses. Don't talk to them, call the Sheriff or even better a Game Warden

Many people think they’re being kind when feeding wildlife. Unfortunately, feeding wildlife can not only cause issues with bringing unwanted wildlife and stray animals into residential communities, doing so is illegal in the state of California.
Quote:

§ 32.1301 Food Left Outside for Certain Mammalian Predators. (a) No person shall feed or in any manner provide food for one or more non-domesticated mammalian predators. A non-domesticated mammalian predator shall include coyotes, raccoons, foxes, opossums, bears, mountain lions, and bobcats.

§ 32.1302 Food Left Outside for Any Animal During Certain Hours. No person shall leave or permit to be left out-of-doors food for any animal between the hours of 10:00 p.m. of any one day and 6:00 a.m. of the following day, unless the area where the food is left is not accessible to non-domesticated mammalian predators.
Have to use non-lead ammo in California for pretty much all hunting.

I belong to a local community FB page about coyote sightings. One family just lost their beloved dog to one. The coyote jumped the fence and mauled their pet in their yard! They chased it away but too late.

cjh 01-29-2021 04:21 PM

Many of our neighbors have heard coyotes howling at night, a few have seen them, a couple have had litters of puppies in the yard and one neighbor has snared 15 of them in the last few years in his yard.
We used to have a litter of red or gray foxes under our shed every spring, but I think the yotes got them all.
I haven't seen a woodchuck in years and all the feral cats have disappeared. We still have a possum when it gets above 25 degrees out. The moles and mice have gone nuts....
And the Barred owls party when they feel like it.

rusnak 01-29-2021 11:11 PM

I think I would use a .22 lr on a coyote. They are out from 10PM up to 2AM.

The pellet break barrel can dispatch up to fox size if you get a neck or head shot.
