I’m feeling pretty good.....except
 

So I spent the last couple of days replacing the timing belt on my Tacoma 3.4 liter. All went well except I have a 17 millimeter bolt left over. I had it in the bag marked air con bracket along with 4 other bolts. I looked everywhere I could with a mirror and from under the truck. Can’t find where it’s supposed to go. Oh well. The truck runs good and hopefully I will never find out where it is supposed to go.

Looks like there are 5 bolts that attach to that bracket. 4 look structural, and a 5th looks to be an adjustment bolt for the pulley.

If it's one of the structural ones, I'm sure 3 out of the 4 wont do much harm if it's a pain to get it back in there

Ouch, that's a big bolt to have left over.

That's like, "I put the suspension back together on the 911 and I've got this 32mm nut left over, but it's probably not necessary." ;)

I’ve got all four in that bracket. The bolt left over is large. 17 mm. The bolt for the adjuster is installed also. The mysterious bolt. It kept me awake last night.

After 30 years of working on cars, I realized that cars are over engineered. I had a 12 quart oil box full of left over nuts and bolts. They all ran fine. 🤪

Hopefully, that wasn't the Jesus bolt. You know, like the Jesus nut, the thing that holds a helicopter's rotor on.

I know the "Jesus Bolt"... I was in the Reserves some years ago and worked with a COL who had been a UH-1 pilot in Vietnam... he he frequently told the story of flying in formation and the Huey in front of him the Jesus bolt came out - threw the rotors and he watched the aircraft in an uncontroled fall from 3 thousand feet... and he was good friends with that crew... I think it left him with some significant PTSD....

I’ve been driving around and so far no issues have appeared. Maybe I’ll sell the bolt on Craigslist... advertise it as a one of a kind mystery bolt.

Seems possible that watching a youtube video of that procedure would provide clues as to where it may belong.

Then you switched in a bolt when installing the bracket. Now you have to find where the switched bolt was supposed to go. ;):D

I thought you were going to say you lost the 10mm socket :)

Like most anyone that has ever worked on a car, I would love to find the engineer that designed the AC bracket on my El Camino and punch him in the nose. It has 5 or 6 bolts that have to come off, and three different size sockets are needed. It is just nuts to have to keep changing socket to work in on the same bracket. Of course the power steering bracket is tied in to it, and some of those bolts are really hidden and hard to get to. Any in addition, they all have to be left loose until the the compressor and PS pump are in place, and the belts tight. Then I got to go through and tighten them all down.

I’m getting good at removing and reinstalling the air con bracket. At least Toyota puts in the same size bolts. Although none are 17 mm🤨
