Opinions on the KEL-TEC P17?

I already have a 22 rifle but am thinking about getting a pistol now. I saw this review for the KEL-TEC P17 and looks like it would be a good candidate.

I like the silencer too, and would want one of those.

We have some gun shops around here. What do you think would be the best way to go about getting one?

Thanks! SmileWavy

I don't get the exitement, it's a 22 pistol , and it doesn't jam... ok
that's kinda like reviewing a base model econbox car that starts and drives..
Yet I don't see Hamster,Cpt slow and Jezza make videos all exited bout a Renault Twingo ?

Kel-tec....no thanks.

I have a suppressor for my 5.7/.22. Or, I should say my trust has a suppressor. I really only use it on the 22. Took about 8 months from the atf to get my stamp. I wouldnt bother, this day in age

Baz, no opinion on Kel-Tec, but watch this - get to the Bill Burr part, it is great.

The silencer will cost more than the pistol. Kel-tec is not a BBQ gun but they make some good pocket .380's (if you like 380).
For the money you will get some plinking fun and ammo will be cheaper. Frankly I'd skip the silencer. Why bother?

Coyotes or raccoons in city limits?

This is not a great time to buy a gun. Worse time to buy ammo. Wait a while and you can probably get something better.

Or you may be waiting until the current politicians make it impossible to buy a handgun...

If you want a cheap .22lr, believe it or not, the Taurus TX22 gets a lot of great reviews. I personally like my Glock G44 (sized exactly like a G19) but it isn't as cheap as others.

Thanks for the comments and feedback so far.

I'll probably talk to some of the gun stores in the area and get their take. I really like that Kel-tec.

No hurry to make a purchase so who knows. Doesn't hurt to do a little research ahead of time.

I still have my late step father's Colt Commander and plenty of ammo, push come to shove. :)

I have the TX22 - feels great in the hand. in 1000 rounds one failure to feed and that was in the first 16 shots fired. I have fed it what ever I can find so it isn't picky. I paid $195 for it in March or April of last year.

Por_sha911 01-31-2021 12:51 PM

I've been told my G44 isn't reliable - shoots everything 36 or 40 grain. I'm good with that. There is someone who loves or hates every pistol out there. Go with the majority of people you trust. How badly can you get hurt for under $200?

A while back, I bought a KelTec CP33 .22lr pistol. That is the one with the 33 rd magazines! Other than being plastic and somewhat crude, it does it's job as a pistol quite well. About the only thing I don't like about it is that you have to physically pull the magazine out rather than just let it drop. I think the little KelTec P17 is going to be a winner! The out the door price on them (once available) should be well under $200.00!

IMHO, Kel-Tecs are toys, not tools.

Yeah, so? They are cheap and something to do.

Tool?

Where did that come from?

Por_sha911 02-01-2021 06:41 PM

The only 'tools' are folks who expect a sub $200 .22lr to be a match grade competition pistol or a high quality self defense weapon.
(no reflection on anyone posting in this thread)

On the other hand, I just dropped over $150 on upgrade parts to try to get my Ruger MKII to feed reliably. Yes, I’ve tried every brand of 22lr known to man. Yes, I’ve sent it back to Ruger and they had “no problem”.
If that Kel-Tec can operate that reliably - then I guess it isn’t that bad after all, now is it?

The Volquartsen parts helped a great deal, but I still had a couple of jams.
Have not spent the time in a ‘lab’ environment with it - but things are improving.
Yes - YouTube has some pretty good info, assuming you filter it out and listen to the right stories.

Trigger, Sear, Disconnector, Firing Pin, Ejector, etc....
And with practice - it becomes easier to do the next time....

The problem is finding ammo. 22 ammo is now over 30-cents/round if you can find it, with gougers selling it for $1/round! Insanity. But there is no reason to think it will get cheaper in the next few years. I just picked up a new Walther P22Q, $289 with the laser.

Has a threaded barrel and want to pick up a silencer but the ones I'm seeing are $600.
