Out skied by my 13 year old...

My 58 year old body doesn't take too well to banging through the bumps.

While my son isn't a graceful or stylish skier, he certainly gets the job done.

Great day, great snow. Had our fill and came home a bit early. Will be back out next weekend.

Join the club. I can’t keep up with my 10 year old and blew out my knee trying to catch my 7 year old... it’s amazing how far both have come since we started them in ski club... Clay is training as a U12 and my daughter is only doing the Nancy Greene program again this year but she is by far the youngest in her group (grouped by ability)... if she wants to race next year, she will be in the U10 race program. To be fair, Grace started skiing at 18 month old, Clay started at 4. Both ski double blacks (at Castle) and have been able to since they were 6.

I'm 63 and can probably snow ski and water ski as well as i did when i was 18.

54 and absolutely ripped some runs this year. New skis are a huge boost. But, I stop and pant to catch my breath. Never did that back in the day.

I grew up mostly in Hawaii, Alabama, South Texas. Not big snow ski areas. My wife liked to ski from going on her church group ski trips to Colorado. So off I went to ski. Totally a beginner, on the bunny slope, get to the point I can traverse the slopes a little better.

Finally feeling a little bit more confident I built up too much speed for my skills, and it looked like the scene from Wide World of Sports when they showed the agony of defeat. I wiped out and finally came to a stop and was trying to figure out was hurt the most and how bad when some punk little 8 year old came to a stop next to me in a spray of snow off of his skis and was happy to inform me "you can't ski very good mister" and all I could say is yea, I can drive a car better than you! He just skied away. Punk ass kid.

My son has been in the all mountain group at Norquay for the last 3 years. Technically, they are lessons but I think that the instructors just take them out and have fun on the mountain. I was very impressed on his ability to pick his lines and get down the mountain.
I have about a half day of hard skiing in me. After that, I am looking to sit down and read a book for a while!
Taking a day off in a couple of weeks and doing a day at one of the big hills with him. He will never look at Norquay the same way again! Lol...
Certainly is fun to get out in the mountains. Crystal clear blue skies yesterday. Bit cold but no wind. Had my heated socks and boot gloves on!

I clearly remember the day that FB II just ran away from me on the soccer pitch. He just cleared off.

It was a beautiful bluebird day at Castle today... as I hung around the base reading a book and drinking coffee with my crutches while my family skied...

All we need are fence planks and a tow rope. No hill, but nice powder in South Texas.

Nostril Cheese 02-16-2021 04:12 AM

We had man made snow in the local mountains north of Los Angeles. My grandmother owned a cabin in the town below the mountain, so it was fun to just see snow on occasion.

I wonder what it must be like to run on fresh powder.

How is the recovery going? Maybe look into a fat bike to spin around on while they ski?

Skiing powder is a wonderful experience if you have skis that will float.

I think my best powder day was at Lake Louise. Waist deep snow on opening day. Cut school to go with my brother.

Seems to be something wrong with seeing South Texas and snow in the same sentence...
Hope you guys are hanging in with power and no frozen toilets!

I had not considered that. They do rent them there. I can’t do the bike thing for 11 more days. Tomorrow I get to start putting weight on it again, 20 lbs a day. I am working on range of motion right now.

Yup.

I really enjoyed skiing but was average.

One of the pilots in my first squadron was from Albuquerque and skied for the University of New Mexico.

We would fly cross country to Kirtland AFB to ski at Scandia.

The first time there we met up with some of his teammates, male and female, that he skied with in college.

What a truly humbling experience...they were in 911's and I was in my 36hp Volkswagen Beetle. I stopped even trying to keep up:cool:

I have a fatbike and have taken it to Norquay a few times to ride the Stoney Squaw trail.
Fun. Kind of like mountain biking in slow motion.
Mostly ride it in Edworthy or East Slopes (Paskapoo). Good for fitness and if you keep the rides short not too stressful on the body.
If they rent by the hour, take one for a light spin and just see how your knee reacts to being on a bike. It will be way different than just spinning on a stationary bike and that may not be a good thing for a recovering knee.

Great thread, Bill! Much admiration for you to be charging ahead with your young man!

I've never snow skied but maybe one day.

I bet it's a blast once you get the hang of it!

While on the subject....this was on earlier tonight (ESPN2) and worth a watch.....

Nice! Liam was off the last two weeks and is back in class today.
Was that down at Castle?
