No, 4cyl on both. Might have a different set up. It could have been designed with a harmonic balancer instead. I have a 2.3l, and the 944 is 2.5l.

stevej37 02-20-2021 08:25 AM

Ok...I see. My Prelude has a 2.4 engine.
I just hope that if it does have that belt...it was changed along with the timing belt last fall.

mattdavis11 02-20-2021 08:29 AM

It would have it does, unless... well you never know if you don't do it yourself.

stevej37 02-20-2021 02:47 PM

^^^ Thinking about it...I realized that I have the service bill...so I looked it up.
It lists two belts..one for $104...one for $83
Also an automatic adjuster for $203
Water pump for $141
along with coolant, shop supplies and 3.5 hrs labor...the whole works came to $930
That also included a free two day rental of a new HR-V.

I feel better now! :)

$930 is not a bad price with a "freebie" car.

Skipped thru a couple 1998 Prelude timing belt vids and your engine has the balance shaft belt.

stevej37 02-20-2021 03:32 PM

And the reason that really pushed me into getting it done was that I was browsing their website and spotted a $100 discount coupon for any major service on a car with over 100K miles.

So with the coupon...it was $830. :)

Agreed, for valve timing, but the serpentine belt is a different animal. Cams should absolutely be driven by chains. Not sure I would buy any car without a timing chain.

Serpentine belts drive the A/C, power steering, water pump, power seats, rear window defroster, ash tray light, brake master cylinder, subwoofer and many other components.

stevej37 02-20-2021 06:33 PM

^^^ Yes..my Fit uses a chain for the valve timing.
I call the exterior belt 'serpentine' but I hear many others just call it an 'accessory' belt.
I don't know which one is correct...prob either one.

Then you could still be a buyer for a 944S2 or a 968. You could get the best of both worlds! One cam is belt driven from the crank, the other cam is driven by chain from the 1st.

Bad stuff happens when the chain, guide pads, or tensioner fail.

javadog 02-21-2021 05:36 AM

There are obviously pros and cons between timing belts and chains. Chains can last longer but they will eventually wear out and then you're generally looking at huge money to change them.

Given that modern engines can last far longer than the older ones, that's becoming more relevant.

stevej37 02-21-2021 08:23 AM

I measured the width of my broken serp belt...5/8 inch. (Post #27)

To run the alternator, water pump, air conditioner, and tension pulley all off of that little belt is amazing that it lasted 235K miles.

mattdavis11 02-21-2021 08:30 AM

^^^Water pump is most likely driven off the timing belt.

stevej37 02-21-2021 08:43 AM

^^^ that's what I thought first also when it broke. I was thinking of driving it into a local garage to have it done. New battery...would have made the 5 mile trip easily.
Just before leaving, I thought maybe I should call the Honda service dept and ask.
He said "definitely do not drive it at all...the water pump is driven off the serpentine belt on the 2010 Fit"
I'm glad I took the time to call him.

I never could understand that logic? If you are replacing anything because you think it is near the end of it's life expectancy why would you keep it as a spare?

Why would you put the old one back on just to go get a new one to take the old one off to put a new one on? Plus in the time it is being used as a back up don't you run the risk of it failing? That's why you took it off in the first place.

Why not just buy two new ones and keep a new one as a back up and do the job once?

Because swapping a serpentine belt is a five minute job, and since they last several years, I don't want a new one to sit in one position for that long and take a "set".

If a belt breaks, I'll toss the old one on long enough to go get another new one.

[QUOTE=Dantilla;11233944]Because swapping a serpentine belt is a five minute job,

Ha! It took me more than 5 minutes to get the front tire off and remove the splash shield. And that was before I even started getting the tensioner held back...lol

Full disclosure....I am not a mechanic. :)

Dantilla 02-21-2021 10:14 AM

Got it.

Last belts I changed were an older Ford F-250 and a Jeep Wrangler.
Both have plenty of room under the hood.

He went on to say he hadn't seen a Corolla belt break, and they look twice as big and strong.

VW 2.slow?

Easiest timing belt I've ever done was a Suzuki Joypop. 660cc 3 cylinder. Took about an hour. Front seats fold up, lots of access.

Fun little thing to drive. Lots of these are getting imported from Japan.

I thought we were on the subject of the Prelude. My mistake.
